According to data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male perpetrators left 9 women killed, 20 (including young girls) raped, 10 injured and 19 harassed in July 2013.
3 women were killed after taking legal action against their husbands. While 50 percent of rape cases were reported in victims’ apartments, 55 percent of rape perpetrators were acquaintances of rape victims in July 2013.
In 2013 so far, male violence left 97 women killed, 97 raped, 127 battered ad 110 sexually harassed.
In June 2013, male perpetrators left 15 women killed, 16 raped, 19 injured and 18 sexually harassed.
Murder
In July, male perpetrated violence left 9 women across 8 different cities in Turkey. Four women were killed by their husbands despite the following legal actions: court restraint order, penal prosecution, official complaint to police, and controlled-release measures.
The perpetrators of two murdered trans women in July - as it is the case with most trans murder cases in Turkey - have yet to be found. Other murder perpetrators included husband (4), ex-husband (2), attempted rapist (1).
In Mardin province, a woman (20) committed suicide after her rapist went unpunished. Another trans woman in Izmir committed suicide due to violence from a lover.
5 women were murdered with a pistol and 2 with a knife, 1 by strangling and 1 by beating, sources said.
Female murder cases were reported in the following cities: Adana, Afyon, Antalya, Aydın (2), Batman, Istanbul, Izmir and Uşak.
Rape
In July, men raped/attempted to rape 20 women and teenager girls across 13 cities in Turkey. 6 rape cases reportedly had more than 2 or more perpetrators.
While 50 percent of rape cases were reported in victims’ apartments, 55 percent of rape perpetrators were acquaintances of rape victims in July 2013.
Forced to prostitution, a women was run over by a car while attempting to run away. At least 10 men were arrested for rape charges and 4 suspects were released after their testimonies.
July’s rape perpetrators included strangers (9), father (3), cousin (2), lover (1), mother’s lover (1), doctor (1) and vice mayor (1).
Rape venues included street (2), apartment (11), car (2), hotel room (1), doctor’s clinic (1) and abduction venues (3).
The rapists were aged between 17 to 62 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 8 to 80.
July rape cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (2), Ağrı, Antalya, Balıkesir (2), Elazığ, Erzurum, Isparta, Istanbul (3), Muğla (2), Siirt, Sinop, Tekirdağ and Zonguldak (3).
Battery-Assault
In July, 10 male violence against women cases were reported across 8 different cities in Turkey.
Women (5) suffered from their husbands most. Other violence perpetrators included civil police (1), ex-husband (1), father (1), and stranger (1).
One man reportedly battered his wife and locked her up inside the apartment for two days.
6 women were reportedly injured by beating, 3 were attacked with a knife and 1 victim suffered from acid attack on the face.
Violence against women cases in July were reported in the following cities: Adana, Afyon, Antalya, Balıkesir, Batman, Eskişehir, Istanbul (2), Kayseri and Maraş.
Harassment
In July, 19 harassment cases were reported across 5 different cities in Turkey.
5 women and teenager girls were harassed by strangers and another young girl (12) by her teacher. Other harassment actors included: co-worker (1) and ex-lover (1).
Harassment cases in June were reported in the following venues: bus (2), on the street (2), school (12), workplace (1) and via phone (2).
July harassment cases were reported in the following cities: Amasra, Çorum, Istanbul (3), Konya (12) and Zonguldak.
July’s harassment actors were aged between 29 to 83 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 8 to 26.
Regional distribution
In July 2013, 57 cases of violence against women, murder, attempted murder, harassment, rape, injury and child abuse were reported across 24 provinces. Most of these incidents were reported in the Marmara and Central Anatolia Region.
58 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (13), Central Anatolia (14), Aegean (8), Mediterranean (9), Black Sea (7), Eastern-Anatolia (3) and South-Eastern Anatolia (3). (ÇT/BM)
