According to data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male perpetrators left 15 women killed, 16 (including young girls) raped, 19 injured and 18 harassed in June 2013.
74 percent of murder victims were slain by their spouses with 2 expelled by court ordered. 44 percent of rape perpetrators knew their victims and 11 women were sexually harassed by policemen during Gezi Resistance in Ankara and Istanbul, the compilation revealed.
According to bianet’s compilation, male-perpetrated violence left 88 women killed, 77 raped, 117 injured and 91 harassed in 2013 so far.
Murder
In June, male perpetrated violence left 15 women across 12 different cities in Turkey. 2 women were slain by their husbands despite court restraint order. One male perpetrator killed his divorce-seeking wife after being released by a prosecutor.
14 out 15 female murder victims in June were killed by their family members. 74 percent of murder victims were slain by their spouses.
59 percent of murder victims were slain by their spouses (11). Other murder perpetrators included father (1), older brother (1), ex-lover (1). Another woman was killed by her husband - who ran away.
Following the murders, 3 men surrendered to the police, 3 other committed suicide.
8 women were murdered with a pistol and 5 with a knife and 2 by strangling, sources said.
The June murderers were aged between 23 to 54 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 15 to 54.
Female murder cases were reported in the following cities: Ağrı, Antep, Aydın, Diyarbakır, Düzce, Erzurum, Iğdır, Istanbul (2), Izmir, Kocaeli, Konya (3) and Uşak.
Mother of young girl (14), a women (28) committed suicide who was forced to marriage and suffered from domestic violence.
Rape
In June, men raped 16 women and teenager girls across 12 cities in Turkey. 6 rape cases reportedly had more than 2 or more perpetrators.
44 percent of women were raped by men who knew them. June rape perpetrators were identified as strangers (9), friends (4), ex-spouse (1), lover (1) and employer (1).
Rape venues included street (7), apartment (5), car (2), workplace (1) and abduction house (1).
The rapists were aged between 17 to 39 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 12 to 88.
June rape cases were reported in the following cities: Antalya, Balıkesir (3), Eskişehir, Istanbul (2), Izmir, Mersin, Nevşehir, Samsun (3), Sinop, Trabzon and Zonguldak.
Battery - Assault
In June, 19 male violence against women cases were reported across 11 different cities in Turkey.
Women (10) suffered from their husbands most. Other violence perpetrators included friend’s husband (1), ex-husband (3), father (2), ex-lover (1) and stranger (2).
7 women were reportedly injured by a knife attack, another one was shot by a pistol. 11 women were battered.
Violence against women cases in June were reported in the following cities: Adana (3), Antalya (2), Denizli, Erzurum, İstanbul (2), Kayseri, Kocaeli (3), Konya (2), Maraş, Muş and Urfa.
Harassment
In June, 18 harassment cases were reported across 8 different cities in Turkey.
11 women were sexually harassed by policemen during Gezi Resistance in Ankara and Istanbul, the compilation revealed.
6 women were harassed by strangers and another by her teacher.
Harassment cases in June were reported in the following venues: Street (8), police station (8), school (1), apartment (1).
June harassment cases were reported in the following cities: Ankara (4), Erzurum, Istanbul (8), Izmir, Izmit, Kars, Muğla and Trabzon.
Regional distribution
In June 2013, 67 cases of violence against women, murder, attempted murder, harassment, rape, injury and child abuse were reported across 31 provinces. Most of these incidents were reported in the Marmara Region.
