It has been five and a half months since university student Gülistan Doku went missing in Turkey's eastern province of Dersim on January 5, 2020. Since then, her fate and whereabouts have been unknown.
Speaking to bianet about the ensuing investigation, Ali Çimen, the attorney of Doku family, has indicated that there has been a recent development. According to Çimen, Zeınal Abarakov, the only suspect, had been informed that his phone would be seized one day before the incident.
Zeınal Abarakov, the boyfriend of Gülistan Doku, was reportedly the last person that she saw before going missing. Attorney Çimen has recently submitted a petition to the Tunceli Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, requesting that Abarakov be arrested as a suspect.
Çimen says that the Tunceli Prosecutor's Office issued a warrant for the seizure of Abarakov's phone on February 27, 2020.
Having known that his phone would be seized, Abarakov sent a message to a friend one day before, on February 26, and said, "They will take my phone tomorrow. I will write to you when they give it back."
Abarakov sent a message to Gülistan Doku on the same day. "Gülistan, if you see my messages, give me an answer. I will help you," he wrote to her.
Attorney Ali Çemen tells bianet the following about the issue:
"The suspect has access to the file. The suspect is informed about the actions to be taken and fabricates evidence based on this. While he did not send any messages to Gülistan till that day and he even disappeared, when he heard that his phone would be seized, he apparently tried to fabricate evidence to say 'I am worried about Gülistan and search her.'

"This very incident has shown how right we were in wanting Zeınal Abarakov to be arrested. The suspect is fabricating evidence and he is perhaps now destroying other evidence as well. We have filed a criminal complaint against the suspect on charge of 'fabricating evidence.' We have also filed a complaint against the ones who conveyed this information to him on charges of 'misconduct in office' and 'violation of confidentiality of an investigation.'
"It is obvious that someone is interfering in the file. The fate and whereabouts of a young woman has been unknown for months. It cannot be learnt what happened to her in such a high-security province as Dersim. We request that the file be accelerated as soon as possible and Abarakov be arrested."
