Minister of Justice: Over 224,878 People Behind Bars, Capacities Exceeded
Minister of Justice has announced that there were 224,878 people in prisons 85,105 of whom are arrested and 139,773 are convicted. The Ministry has pointed out that the figure exceeded the capacity by 22,000.

The Progressive Legists Association, declaring that the rights of prisoners have been further restricted by Statutory Decrees, has expressed that prisoners’ rights to be visited have been obstructed, that they are not being taken to the hospital and their access to certain newspapers and TV channels have been prohibited.

Torture and Ill-Treatment on the Rise, TİHV Report Cautions
The Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) published its annual report for the year 2011. Law enforcement officials subjected some 724 prisoners to torture and ill-treatment during the aforementioned period, the report said. That figure represents an increase in the frequency of such human rights violations.

13 Inmates Die in Urfa Prison Fire
13 inmates lost their lives and five were injured during a fire that broke out inside a prison ward in the southeastern province of Urfa on the evening of June 16. The incident may have come about due to rights violations caused by overcrowding, according to allegations.

According to the statements of the Ministry, the number of convicts and detainees in prisons increased four times since 2000, so the total population approximately tripled. There are around 7.000 “excess capacity” convicts and detainees; Kıraç told that there are 15.000 “excess capacity” indeed.
