After killing of Diyarbakır Bar President Tahir Elçi, curfew has been declared second time in Turkey’s southeastern Sur district of Diyarbakır province.
Police have launched operation upon the declaration of curfew and conflict broke out.
Fırat News Agency (ANF) wrote that police fired on group gathering at Dağkapı Square, which left a woman dead and a man heavily wounded.
Doğan News Agency announced that boom is heard in the district, and a police officer wounded.
Gendarmerie Special Operation teams alongside police have joined the operation. Helicopters provide aerial support for the operation.
HDP and DBP: We are worried
Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and Democratic Regions Party (DBP) expressed they are “worried about loss of lives” in the written statement following the curfew.
“After the curfew declared in Sur, the district has been blockaded by security forces and afterwards clashes have begun. We want to note that we are worried about loss of lives following the curfew.”
Sur sub-Governorate declared that curfew was declared until further notice in six neighborhoods and one street as of 5 a.m.
Sur sub-Governor Mehmduh Tura explained the reason of the curfew as “ensuring security of life and property of our citizens”.
Six neighborhoods, one street banned
Curfew has been declared in six out of 15 neighborhoods in addition to one street.
End time of the curfew is yet to be announced.
After killing of Tahir Elçi and two police officers, curfew which was declared in Sur district on November 28 was lifted on November 30.
Recently, curfew was declared in Sur district between the dates of October 9-13, September 6-7 and September 13-14. (AS/TK)
