Preet Bharara preparing the indictment against Rıza Sarraf has earned his reputation by launching probes into diplomats, politicians, and as many as 100 bankers following global crisis in 2008.

According to BBC Türkçe, Bharara (48) of Indian origin had people charged with arms and drugs trade brought to New York with the security forces he sent to 25 different countries and had them stand before judge after he became New York prosecutor in 2009.
Tension with Moscow
Bharara had Russian citizen named Viktor Bout living in Moscow and detained in Thailand by Interpol for “selling arms to terrorist groups” brought to New York. Bout was sentenced to 25 years of prison after the trial.
Russia then had claimed sending Bout to the US contradicts international law and protested the ruling.

“Street fighter”
Bharara has become a known figure by starting to prepare indictments against high-ranking bankers.
Time magazine had put the prosecutor on its cover under the title of “This Man is Busting Wall St.”.
The article entitked “Street fighter” read, “Prosecutor Preet Bharara has already now taken down prominent figures of Wall Street. He is just starting”.
Bharara and his team investigating into insider trading had brought suit against 60 people including finance company Galleon Group’s executives Raj Rajaratnam, Rajat Gupta and Anil Kumar.
Strugge against finance giants
Bharara winning successive 85 Wall Street cases lost a case in July 2014, Rengan the brother of convicted Raj Rajaratnam was acquitted by the court.
Another figure whom Bharara accused of transacting on market with the information obtained from inside was US’ one of biggest hedge funds, SAC Capital’s head Steven Cohen.
The case tried in 2013 resulted in the greatest amount of compromise, and Cohen was sentenced to pay $1.8 billion to the US.
JP Morgan, Bank of America, and Citigroup are among the financial institutions into which Bharara launched investigation and had them penalized. (EKN/TK)
