In Turkey, where the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services developed a "National Program for Struggle Against Child Labor" (2017-2023), one child worker died in southeastern Urfa province and two child workers were injured in Maraş province yesterday (September 22).
15-year-old Ayşe Daş, a seasonal agricultural worker, lost her life after a minibus rolled over in Urfa. In Maraş, two child workers were hospitalized after they had been affected by the smell of an insulating material.
A minibus driven by İsa Y. spinned out of control and rolled over between Çamlıdere and Baltutan neighborhoods in Urfa. The injured driver and two others who were on board were hospitalized by paramedics.
15-year-old Ayşe Daş, who was working in a cotton field in the province, could not be saved despite all efforts.
In Maraş, four workers entered a well. After they had been affected by the smell of insulating materials, they were all taken to a hospital.
Hasan Ç. (26), one of the workers who came to work in the well of a private hotel in Onikişubat district, entered the well and started working. After some time, Hasan Ç. felt unwell due to the smell and could not leave the well. Three workers, including two children, entered the well to get him out.
Affected by the smell of insulating materials, Bünyamin Ç. (20), Ö.Ç. (17) and Hasan Ç. could leave the well themselves. However, E.Ç. (16) could not get out. Fire brigade crews were called to take the fainted child out.
While E.Ç. could be rescued after efforts for half an hour, E.Ç. and three others affected by the smell were taken to a private hospital. Treated in hospital, all four people are reportedly in good health now.
According to the August report of the Health and Safety Labor Watch (İSİG), seven child workers died in occupational homicides in August. These homicides occurred in the agriculture and metal sectors. (AÖ/SD)
