According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and news agencies, men killed at least 24 women and raped four women in Turkey in December 2020.
Last month, the deaths of at least 16 women (in the provinces of Antalya -4-, Ankara -1-, Bursa -1-, Bolu -1-, Urfa -1-, Karaman -1-, Van -1-, Kocaeli -1-, Maraş -1-, Malatya -1-, Mersin -1-, Kastamonu -1-, Sakarya -1-) were reported in the press as suspicious.

2019 and 2020 Male Violence Monitoring Report In 2019, men killed at least 328 women and 15 children; raped 51 women; forced 712 women to sex work; harassed 232 women; abused 279 children; inflicted violence on 630 women. The deaths of at least 134 women were reported in the news as "suspicious". In 2020, men killed at least 284 women, harassed 147 women, abused 265 children and raped 96 women. Men also forced at least 818 women to sex work and inflicted violence on at least 792 women in 2020. Femincide/ Murder
Men killed at least 24 women in December 2020; this number was 23 in December 2019. One of the women killed by men in December 2020 was a citizen of Turkmenistan.

The "excuses" of men for killing 17 women were not reported in the news. Men killed three women "because they wanted to break up" or "refused reconciliation" and killed four women at the pretext of "jealousy".
In December, 11 women were killed by their husbands or ex-husbands, six women were killed by their boyfriends or ex-boyfriends, five women were killed by family members such as father and son and one woman was killed by a male burglar/ thief. The relation/ acquaintance in one feminicide was not reported.
Men killed 13 women inside the house and four women in places outside the house such as in a hotel, workplace and street. The places where seven feminicides had been committed were not reported in the news.
Men killed 13 women with firearms and killed eight women with sharp objects such as a knife and axe. The methods of killing in three feminicides were not reported in the press.

Sexual assault/ Rape
According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and news agencies, men raped at least four women in December 2020. Last December, this number was five.
While the perpetrator who raped one woman was not reported in the press, one woman was raped by her colleague, one woman by a doctor and one woman was reportedly raped by her manager.
While men raped two women inside the house, they raped two women in places outside the house such as the workplace and hospital.

Harassment
In December 2020, men harassed at least 11 women. The number of women harassed by men was 28 last December.
At least three women were harassed by male strangers. While seven women were harassed by political party (CHP) members of executives, one woman was harassed by a male writer.

The scenes of six incidents were not reported in the press. Men harassed five women in places outside the house such as the street and ferry.

Child abuse
Men abused at least eight children, including boys, in December 2020. This number was 32 last December.
One child was abused by a relative, one child by a political party (CHP) executive, one child by the executive of another political party (AKP), one child by her husband that she was made to marry at a young age. At least four children were abused by male strangers.

Violence/ Injury
Men inflicted violence on at least 61 women in December. This figure was 74 in the same month last year.
Seven women subjected to violence by men were hospitalized in "critical condition." men had been systematically using violence against four women. Two of the women were from Uzbekistan, one was from Syria and one was from Russia.
Three women who were subjected to violence were trans women.

At least 34 women were subjected to violence from their husbands/ex-husbands, five from their boyfriends/ex-boyfriends, 10 by 13 men whom they did not know, eight women by family members such as their fathers and sons, one woman by a chief worker, one by a patient's relative, and one by her manager. A writer used digital violence on women.
Men's "excuses" for inflicting violence on 49 women were not reported in the news. Men used violence against two women on the pretext of "coronavirus." Men inflicted violence on one woman "by mistake" and three women because of "jealousy." Men inflicted violence on six women because they "did not want to make peace" and "turned them down."
Men inflicted violence on 44 women by beating them. They injured at least 12 women with sharp objects, three women with firearms and one woman by burning her. Men used digital violence against one woman.
Men inflicted violence on 23 women at home, 16 women outside (marketplace, street, courthouse, hospital). The places where men inflicted violence on 21 women were not reported in the news.
Judicial process There were 72 perpetrators who inflicted violence on women. Only five of them were arrested. 32 perpetrators were detained. Investigations were started against 14 perpetrators. Forced sex work
Men forced at least 43 women to sex work. This figure was 161 in the same month last year. 35 of the women were not citizens of Turkey.
Judicial process There were 27 perpetrators who forced women to sex work. 23 perpetrators were arrested. Three perpetrators were detained. Legal processes about three perpetrators were not reported in the news. |
Explanation The bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report only covers women who lost their lives as a result of male violence. We do not include any violence cases or crimes that are not gender-based. Throughout the year, we keep track of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths of women in separate monthly tallies but do not add them to the number presented in the headline. At the end of the year, we examine these cases of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths to determine whether the crimes were gender-based. We add the gender-based incidents into the report. We do not include any murders in the reports that are committed by people with psychological disorders (such as murders committed by people with schizophrenia). We include suicide or suicide attempt incidents in the tally only if the woman was subjected to violence/ systematic violence in her past. We cover these suicide incidents in a separate category and do not add suicide cases to the number presented in the headline. In addition, we don't include femicide cases that occur in a mass murder in which the woman was not directly targeted under the condition that the debated incident is not gender based either. Occupations of the offenders only included in the reports when the incident of violence is related to the occupation of the offender. For example, "Woman was murdered at home by his husband, who is a professional soldier." We add the violence committed on children by men, to make the extent of violence visible. |
