In the third week of the "KCK trial", procedures reached the presentation of the defence. 152 defendants are tried for their alleged affiliation with the Democratic Confederation of Kurdistan. When the defendants spoke Kurdish, the microphone was switched off.

The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons announced on their website that the suicide bomber who blew up himself and injured 32 people in Istanbul last Sunday was a member of their organization. The organization declared not to support the PKK's decision for a ceasefire.

The reading of the indictment related to the KCK trial in Diyarbakır has still not been finished. The court dismissed the defence lawyers' requests for shortening the process. 152 defendants stand accused for an alleged affiliation to the KCK organization.

Rakel Dink, widow of slain Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, criticized the decision to try triggerman suspect Samast at a juvenile court. The trials heard in Trabzon and Istanbul were not merged in the 15th hearing. International observers are concerned about the consideration of the ECHR decision.

The 15th hearing of the trial regarding the murder of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink is currently held in Istanbul - the first session after Turkey's conviction by the ECHR. Dink family lawyer Çetin will reiterate her demand to merge the files of Trabzon and Istanbul. A defence lawyer requested to have triggerman suspect Samast tried at a Juvenile Court.

MAZLUMDER President Ünsal criticized the court board of the KCK trial in Diyarbakır for "misconduct of office" because they refused permission for a defence in Kurdish. Ünsal demands an administrative and criminal investigation about the court board.

Principle of Fair Trial Endangered?
On the second day of the KCK trial, the number of defendants increased by one to 152. The court decided to read out a summary of the 7,500-page indictment. Yıldırım of the Mardin Bar Association sees a violation of the right to a fair trial in the court's dismissal of the defendants' request to present their defence in Kurdish.

Öcalan Calls for Democratic Peace to Extend Ceasefire
In the end of September, Karayılan from the Democratic Confederation of Kurdistan had announced to extend the ceasefire for another month. Imprisoned PKK leader Öcalan now criticized the "elimination policies" of the government and said he might take a different decision on 31 October.

Several Approaches - No Concrete Steps
Tahmaz from the Turkish Peace Parliament thinks that the government is not going to take concrete steps towards a solution of the Kurdish question before the election in 2011. Kurdish politician Türk wants the armed forces of the PKK to withdraw from the region. Retired military judge Kardaş suggests withdrawing the Turkish Armed Forces.

A Diyarbakır court handed down a suspended ten-month prison sentence to BDP Co-chair Demirtaş, former president of the Human Rights Association branch, under charges of "propaganda for an illegal organization" because of a statement he made about PKK leader Öcalan.

Former 1st Army Commander Çetin Doğan was arrested on the Bodrum airport upon an arrest warrant related to the "Sledgehammer" coup plan trial. Chief of General Staff Başbuğ convoked a meeting after the court decided to issue a total of 102 arrests warrants.

"Peace Groups" Have to Go Back
According to Fırat News Agency, it was decided to send the "peace groups" back to Qandil and Mahmur. 34 people came to Turkey in October 2009 upon the call of imprisoned PKK leader Öcalan. A trial was opened against 26 of them after their arrival, 13 members were detained.

Kışanak from the Peace and Democracy Party reiterated the proposal of 26 sovereign regions. Assoc. Prof. Dr Aktar said that the request suits the EU Regional Policy and that it could be a useful step on the way to a solution of the Kurdish question.
