"Unsolved Murder Cases Should not Be Closed by Prescrition"
Relatives of victims of political murders visited the Parliament to talk to officials of five political parties, the parliamentary chairman and the Head of the Parliamentarian Commission for Human Rights. They sought answers to prevent further murders.

Disciplinary Fine for Detained Conscientious Objector Aydemir
The Eskişehir Military Court imposed a one-month disciplinary fine on conscientious objector Enver Aydemir because of his refusal to wear prison clothes and disobedience of orders. Aydemir is not allowed for one month to see anybody else but his lawyer.

No Records of National Defence Commission
The Defence Commission does not keep records of its meetings. The Parliamentary Record Office says they were never requested to keep record of the commission. Deputy council Akyeşilmen emphasizes the importance of a public record for more transparency.

Was Journalist Hrant Dink Killed by Two People?
A secret witness of the murder of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink claimed that prime supect Ogün Samast killed Dink together with alleged instigator Yasin Hayal. In a statement to the prosecution the witness also said that Osman Hayal watched the incident.

Transgender Derya Y. Killed in Antalya
35-year-old transsexual women Derya T. was stabbed to death at her home in Antalya on 8 February. The police are investigating the matter. Another transsexual woman was injured with a knife two days earlier in Ankara.

More than 50 Percent of Women Work off the Record
Women's unemployment was discussed at the "EU Accession Process and Women's Employment" conference held in Diyarbakır. A crucial reason for the high women's unemployment rate in the south-east of Turkey is illiteracy. 66 percent of employed women work off the record.

State Remains Untouched in Dink Murder Case
In the 12th hearing of the Dink case, the joint attorneys of the Dink family requested to review the Cage Action Plan file. The decision was left to the prosecutor. None of the detained defendants was released. The court refused to hear intelligence officers accused of "neglect".

In the 12th hearing of the Dink murder trial the joint attorneys requested to investigate the "Cage Action Plan" with regard to the murder. The lawyers furthermore demand thorough investigations into all aspects of the case. International observers emphasized the importance of a forceful handling of the case.

Secret Witness of Dink Murder Still not Heard
The secret witness of the murder of Hrant Dink did not appear at court because of a 'misunderstanding of the referring directive'. Lawyer Belen drew attention to that fact that important evidence is kept confidential because it is accounted for as a "state secret".

Families of Murdered Intellectuals Follow up Dink Murder Case
Families and friends of murdered journalists, writers, intellectuals and artists gathered before the 12th hearing of the Hrant Dink case to demand justice in respect to the Dink murder and other political murders. They stated, "We are interveners of the Dink case as well".

EMASYA Protocol Abrogated
The EMASYA protocol, which enabled soldiers to intervene directly in civilian incidents, has been lifted. Interior Minister Atalay forwarded the decision to the governorships, saying: "The existing legislation is sufficient, the law gives the authority to the governors".

Adana: 3,155 Children Arrested in 2009
According to a report of the İHD Adana, 299 children were detained in 2009 in Adana. The children state that they were beaten by police officers, threatened to "confess", restrained by hand-cuffs and chains and exposed to torture by soldiers in prison.

Turkish Cameraman Assaulted at Work
Cameraman Ertuğrul Yılmaz form Kanal 48 was attacked when he took footage of rubble dropped in a forest in Marmaris on the Mediterranean coast. Yılmaz was taken to hospital with a broken nose and broken ribs. A complaint was filed with the attackers.

Tens of thousands of people used their right not to work for one day and supported the struggle of the Tekel workers in a general strike. For Türk-İş President Kumlu it was a successful protest action withstanding the pressure of officials and employers.

Call for Release of "Revolutionary Headquarters" Defendant Yeşiltepe
Turkish non-governmental organizations request the release of Mehmet Yeşiltepe from Devrimci Hareket magazine who has been detained for ten months related to the "Revolutionary Headquarters" operation. A series of activities is planned prior to the hearing on 23 February.

Sentence for Juveniles' "Light Bulb Tayyip" Slogans
Eight trials have been launched against three high school students in Bursa for the slogan "Light bulb Tayyip". The juveniles were convicted in three cases, so far only one court ruled for their acquittal. Young O.K. was found guilty of the same charges in Bursa last year.

ECHR: Religious Indication on IDs Breaches Convention
The European Court of Human Rights convicted Turkey of a breach of freedom of religion. Sinan Işık had applied to change the religious indication on his ID from "Islam" to "Alevi". The court saw the root of the problem in the very existence of the field of indication.

Human Rights Defender Kalaycı Released
Lawyer Filiz Kalaycı, executive of the Human Rights Association, was released in the second hearing after 8 months in detention. The Human Rights Association claims that evidence was forged by the police. Witness Özkan stated that his statement was taken under pressure.
