Equality Report: Once More a Confession of Failure for Turkey
The women's organization KA.DER issued the third "Report on the Representation of Gender Equality in Turkey". Turkey, "still resisting to gender equality on the 100th anniversary of the World Women's Day on 8 March", gained zero credits in the 2010 report.

Women's unemployment was discussed at the "EU Accession Process and Women's Employment" conference held in Diyarbakır. A crucial reason for the high women's unemployment rate in the south-east of Turkey is illiteracy. 66 percent of employed women work off the record.

Municipalities Protect Women with Collective Labour Agreement
Implementing the collective labour agreement, a Diyarbakır municipality employee had to pay half of his salary to his wife because of violence imposed to his family. Agreements of more than 40 Turkish municipalities contain similar regulations to protect and promote women.

2 eye-witnesses testified in the murder case of Ahmet Yılıdız. The victim's father, on trial as a defendant, is still fugitive. The judge did not accept representatives of 2 NGOs to the public hearing. Lawyer Söyle said, "The court's attitude regarding the arrest of the defendant does not give any hope".

"Unjust Provocation" no Excuse for Honour Killing
Hasan Korkmak received a life sentence for strangling his wife Sati Korkmak because he thought she was cheating on him. For the first time a family involved in an "honour" killing sought help from an organization. Korkmak was not granted mitigation for "unjust provocation".

The Court of Appeals decreed in favour of men who want to annul their marriage because their wives supposedly did not enter the marriage as virgins. Kurdish artist Rojin filed a criminal complaint against Akşam newspaper editor Serdar Turgut. Rojin said, "I do not expect an apology, I want this insult to be punished on behalf of all women".

Female Engineers against Gender Based Discrimination at Work
Women Engineers have started a campaign against job advertisements containing additions like "military service completed" or "male engineer" and against the publication of those adverts by the engineer chambers. They also demand to finally set up a Gender Based Discrimination Monitoring Secretary within the engineers' umbrella organization TMMOB.

15 Years Imprisonment for Deaths of 8 Women
The prosecutor's office demands a 15 years prison sentence for the employer, the administrative manager and the driver who are held responsible for the drowning of 8 women during the flood in Istanbul earlier this month. The victims' lawyer will object because of "severe neglect".
