At the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Plenary Session held in Ankara yesterday (March 9), Members of the Parliament approved the proposal foreseeing the establishment of a Parliamentary Commission to "investigate the reasons behind violence against women and to specify the measures that need to be taken" within this context.
In the wake of March 8 Women's Day, the MPs discussed the Parliamentary inquiries submitted by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and İYİ Party.
In their combined Parliamentary inquiries, the political parties demanded that "the reasons underlying violence against women be investigated and the measures that need to be taken be identified."
The combined Parliamentary inquiries were voted by the MPs following the discussions and the Parliament has passed the proposal that foresees the establishment of a Parliamentary Commission to investigate the reasons behind violence against women and to specify the necessary measures."
The related Parliamentary Commission will consist of 19 members and will work for three months at the first stage. Based on the data and evaluations obtained during these three months, the commission will prepare a report. This report will be discussed at the Plenary Session. (EKN/SD)
