Feminicide/ Murder
In February 2021, men killed at least 33 women and three men who were with the women at the moment of incident. Last February, this number was 20. At least four women killed by men had protection or restraining orders issued. One of the women killed by men was from Morocco.

Men killed 14 women inside the house while they killed 10 women in places outside the house such as a hotel, street, vehicle and forest area. The scenes of nine feminicides were not reported in the press.
Men killed 17 women with firearms, 11 women with sharp objects such as knives and axes and they killed three women by strangling them. While men killed one woman by crushing her head with a dumbbell, they battered one woman to death in February 2021.
Judicial process There were 36 male perpetrators who killed women. Only nine perpetrators were arrested. 14 perpetrators were detained, seven perpetrators committed suicide. Murder of children

Sexual assault/ Rape
According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and news agencies, men raped at least 12 women in February 2021. This number was four last February.
Eight women were sexually assaulted by seven men, one woman by her manager, one woman by her father, one woman by a theater actor and one woman was sexually assaulted by a police officer.
Men had been systematically sexually assaulting one woman.
Men raped one woman inside the house and two women in places outside the house such as a law bureau and subway. The scenes of incident where men raped nine women were not reported in the press.

Harassment
Men harassed at least nine women in February 2021. This figure was five in the same month last year.
Seven women did not know the four men who harassed them. One woman was harassed by a municipal employee and one was her neighbor.
Men harassed seven women verbally and physically. Men harassed one woman by filming her and one by masturbating in front of her.
Men harassed eight women outside (streets, bus stops). The place where men harassed one woman was not reported in the news.

Child abuse
Men abused at least for children, including boys, in February 2021. This figure was 23 in the same month last year.

Violence/injury
Men inflicted violence on at least 57 women in February. This figure was 51 in the same month last year.
10 women who were subjected to violence by men were hospitalized in "critical" condition. Trans women were among the women who were subjected to violence by men. Men had been systematically violent with at least five women.
One of the women was from Syria.

The degree of acquaintance between 20 men and at least 16 women whom they inflicted violence on was not reported in the news.
Men inflicted violence on four women because they "wanted to divorce." Men inflicted violence on one woman because of robbery, one because of jealousy, one because of inheritance, one because of money, one because of wearing a niqab and one because of not turning down the volume of the music. Forced sex work
In February 2021, men forced at least 104 women to sex work. This figure was 134 in the same month last year. 43 women who were forced to sex work were not citizens of Turkey.
Judicial process There were at least 50 perpetrators who forced women to sex work. Only 13 perpetrators were arrested. 27 perpetrators were released after detention. |
Explanation The bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report only covers women who lost their lives as a result of male violence. We do not include any violence cases or crimes that are not gender-based. Throughout the year, we keep track of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths of women in separate monthly tallies but do not add them to the number presented in the headline. At the end of the year, we examine these cases of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths to determine whether the crimes were gender-based. We add the gender-based incidents into the report. We do not include any murders in the reports that are committed by people with psychological disorders (such as murders committed by people with schizophrenia). We include suicide or suicide attempt incidents in the tally only if the woman was subjected to violence/ systematic violence in her past. We cover these suicide incidents in a separate category and do not add suicide cases to the number presented in the headline. In addition, we don't include femicide cases that occur in a mass murder in which the woman was not directly targeted under the condition that the debated incident is not gender based either. Occupations of the offenders only included in the reports when the incident of violence is related to the occupation of the offender. For example, "Woman was murdered at home by his husband, who is a professional soldier." We add the violence committed on children by men, to make the extent of violence visible. |
