Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chair Figen Yüksekdağ has been relieved of her MP duties after a conviction was handed down and was later approved in parliament.
Yüksekdağ, who has been under arrest since November 4, was sentenced to 10 months in prison for attending the funeral of the Marxist Leninist Communist Party’s (MLKP) Yasemin Çiftçi, who was killed by an improvised explosive device on February 13, 2012, a verdict the Supreme Court approved.
The court’s decisions regarding MPs are read aloud in the parliament, resulting in an MP being immediately stripped of his/her duties without a vote, per Constitution Article No. 84.
