The deaths of at least 17 women (in the provinces of Urfa (1), Samsun (2), Antalya (1), İzmir (1), İstanbul (1), Siirt (2), Dersim (1), Bursa (1), Mersin (1), Tekirdağ (1), Aydın (1), Sakarya (1), Ankara (1), Tokat (2)) were reported in the press as suspicious.
The death of one child in Dyarbakır was also reported suspicious.

2021 - 2020 In the first nine months of 2021, men killed 234 women, harassed 116 women, abused 111 children and raped 78 women. Men forced at least 507 women to sex work, injured and inflicted violence on at least 617 women. In the first nine months of 2021, the deaths of 170 women were reported in the press as "suspicious". Men killed at least 25 children. In the first nine months of 2020, men killed at least 206 women, harassed 115 women, abused 201 children and raped 72 women. Murder of Children

Men inflicted violence on five children in Kayseri, Antep, İzmir and Karabük.

Sexual Assault / Rape
Men raped at least five women in September. This number was 19 last September. One of the women raped by men had mental disabilities.
One woman was raped by her boss and at least one woman was raped by a man who alleged that he was a religious official. The relation between the women and the male perpetrators in three incidents was not reported.
Men raped five women in places outside the house such as a forest, workplace and bus.

Harassment
In September 2021, men harassed at least 10 women. This figure was 18 in the same month last year.
One woman was harassed by a political party executive, one by her neighbor, one by her boss, one by a passenger, and one by an association manager. The degree of acquaintance between five women and men who harassed them was not reported in the press.
Men harassed eight women verbally and physically, one by taking photographs/videos of them and one woman verbally during a conference.
Men harassed nine women in places outside of home such as streets and workplaces and one woman on the internet.

Child abuse
Men abused at least 13 girls and boys in September. This figure was 20 in the same month last year. Men had been systematically abusing at least one child.
Two children were abused by a cleaning worker, one by their relative, one by their father and one by their grandfather. The degree of acquaintance between eight children and seven men who abused them was not reported in the press.
Men abused on child at home and 12 children in places outside of home such as parks, the vicinity of schools and streets.

Men inflicted violence on at least 65 women in September. This figure was 97 in the same month last year.
Five women whom men inflicted violence on were hospitalized in "critical" condition. Men had been systematically violent with at least three women.

One of the women whom men inflicted violence on was from Syria and one was from Iran.

At least 49 women were injured by their husbands, boyfriends, ex-husbands and ex-boyfriends. One woman was subjected to violence from her students, one woman from her grandchild, and three women from her elder family members, such as elder brothers and sons. The degree of acquaintance between nine women and 11 men who inflicted violence on them was not reported in the press.
Men inflicted violence on 12 women because "they wanted to break up or they did not want to make peace," one woman because of "jealousy," and one woman because "she did not make coffee." Men inflicted violence on three women after they broke into their home for thievery. Men's "excuses" for inflicting violence on 47 women were not reported in the press.
Men injured at least 49 women by battering them. They injured eight women with firearms and four women with sharp objects.
Men injured 19 women in places outside of home such as cars, workplaces, buses and forests and 38 women at home. The places where men injured eight women were not reported in the press.
Judicial Process There were 64 perpetrators who inflicted violence on women. Only seven perpetrators were arrested. Nine perpetrators were detained. The judicial process about one perpetrator was reported as "escaped," and one perpetrator was reported as "sought." One perpetrator was released. One perpetrator killed himself. Legal action was taken against 20 perpetrators. Judicial processes about at least 24 perpetrators were not reported in the press. |
Forced sex work
Men forced at least 78 women to sex work in September. This figure was 59 in the same month last yeat. 77 women who were forced to sex work were not citizens of Turkey. There were children among those who were forced to sex work.

Explanation The bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report only covers women who lost their lives as a result of male violence. We do not include any violence cases or crimes that are not gender-based. Throughout the year, we keep track of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths of women in separate monthly tallies but do not add them to the number presented in the headline. At the end of the year, we examine these cases of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths to determine whether the crimes were gender-based. We add the gender-based incidents into the report. We do not include any murders in the reports that are committed by people with psychological disorders (such as murders committed by people with schizophrenia). We include suicide or suicide attempt incidents in the tally only if the woman was subjected to violence/ systematic violence in her past. We cover these suicide incidents in a separate category and do not add suicide cases to the number presented in the headline. In addition, we don't include femicide cases that occur in a mass murder in which the woman was not directly targeted under the condition that the debated incident is not gender based either. Occupations of the offenders only included in the reports when the incident of violence is related to the occupation of the offender. For example, "Woman was murdered at home by his husband, who is a professional soldier." We add the violence committed on children by men, to make the extent of violence visible. |
