According to data bianet compiled from local, national and internet media between January 1 and December 31, 2018, men killed at least 255 women, 20 children including three babies and 39 men who were with the women at the time of the homicides.
Men raped 61 women, harassed 188 women, forced 516 women, including children, to sex work. Men sexually abused 347 girls and injured at least 380 women.

At least 40 women died or committed suicide suspiciously. One of them was a transgender woman.

Men attempted to kill 18 women.
Men tried to kidnap 16 women, some of whom were with their children. Men reportedly kidnapped the children to take revenge on their mothers.
Femicide
In 2018, men killed at least 255 women, 20 children including three babies and 39 men who were with the women at the time of the homicides.
Where did the men kill the women?
147 of the 255 women were killed in their or their parents' homes.
Men killed 60 women in public places such as parks, in front of homes, in front of courthouses, shopping malls. Ten women were killed in cars.
23 of the killed women were refugees.
Ten of them were from Syria, two from Afghanistan, one from Kyrgyzstan, one from Germany, one from Azerbaijan, one from Turkmenistan, one from Morocco, one from Uzbekistan, one from Kazakhstan. The countries where four of the women came from could not be identified.
Who killed the women?
More than half of the women were killed by their husbands. 162 women were killed by their husbands, boyfriends or men whom they married in an unofficial religious ceremony.
20 women were killed by family members such as brothers, fathers, grandsons and 13 were killed by relatives such as uncles and nieces.
20 women knew people who killed them, two did not. Two perpetrators raped the women before killing them. Perpetrators of 10 femicides have not been identified or were not reported.
How did the men kill women?
More than half of the women were killed by firearms.
One of the perpetrators was actually a prisoner who committed the murder in March in Ankara when he temporarily left the prison upon permission.
Men killed 153 women with firearms such as pistols and rifles, 76 women with sharp objects such as knives, adzes, sickles. Men choked 10 women with their hands or headscarves.
Men also tortured five and beat eight women to death. How the men killed three women were not reported.
What were men's excuses for killing women?
Men killed 76 women because they "wanted to divorce or break up" or "rejected to meet or become lovers with them" and killed 25 because of jealousy ("She did not answer the phone" / "I earn more than you" / social media).
Men killed at least 7 women after arguments reasons of which were uncertain and 15 women for other excuses (theft, wanting to go outside, his sister wanting to divorce, resisting rape, not cooking a meal, not giving money). Men's excuses for killing 111 women were not reported.
Five of the killed women were married at an early age.
Judicial processOne of the murderers was also previously convicted for murder (May - Bursa province). 37 men who killed women committed suicide, 7 attempted suicide. Three of the men were taken into custody, nine of them were arrested. 22 men turned themselves in to police, 3 men fled. |
Child homicides
Men killed 20 children to harm or take revenge on the women whom they use violence against. At least 3 of the killed children were toddlers. 2 of them were Syrian.
Parents of the eight children who were killed were in the process of divorce. Seven fathers who were in the process of divorce killed the children for "revenge."
Among the killers of the children, 13 were their father, 2 were their step-father, 3 were their mothers' or sisters' ex-boyfriends, one was their neighbor and one was the child's father's cousin.
Men killed three children with firearms such as pistols or rifles, four by chokehold and two with knives.
Two of the killed children's mothers filed complaints but the police did not take them into consideration.
Protection order for one of the killed children's mother was expired. The mother applied for a new protection order. The order was issued only two days after the killing of the child (February - Denizli province).

Two killed Syrians siblings' names were not reported on the media.
Rape
At least 61 incidents of rape were covered in the media in 2018.
In four incidents, the perpetrators also extorted the women. 11 women were battered after the rape. Two women were threatened not to tell anyone about the rape.
One of the women was mentally disabled. It was determined that she was raped after it was found that she was pregnant for five and a half months (February - Kars province).
10 of the women were refugees:
Syria (2), Georgia (1), Kazakhstan (1), Azerbaijan (1), Ghana (1), United Kingdom (1), Kyrgyzstan (2). One woman was reported as "a foreign national."
10 women who were sexually assaulted by men had disabilities.
Amon the perpetrators, five were security officers and one was a gynecologist.
Women did not know 10 of the men who raped them. Those were the men introduced themselves as police officers or the men break into homes for theft.
46 perpetrators were acquaintances of the women they raped. In five of the 61 cases, women were raped by their husbands or ex-boyfriends. Also in five cases, the perpetrator was either father or uncle of the women he raped.
In three cases, women were raped by their neighbors. In at least eight cases, the perpetrator was a person who was applied for his services, such as a gynecologist, a police officer and a taxi driver.
One sex worker was raped by her "customer". 18 women were raped in public places such as hotels, mountainous areas, forests, cafes or workplaces. 36 were raped at home.
Judicial process37 of the perpetrators were arrested. Two of them were arrested because of different charges than rape. 38 perpetrators were taken into custody, 13 of them were released. 5 were released upon judicial control. 3 perpetrators were covered in the media as "at large" or "wanted." |
Harassment
In 2018, men harassed 188 women.
Women did not know the 256 men who harassed them. One of them was an immigration authority manager (February - Konya province), two were bus drivers (October - Manisa province, May - Zonguldak province), one was a waiter (September - İstanbul), one was a man who introduced himself as a delivery person (August, Kocaeli province).
Women were harrassed by 12 men whom they know (friend, ex-boyfriend, ex-husband). One woman was harassed by a man whom she met on social media (February). One actor was also among the harassers (June). One woman was harassed by a relative (September) and one was harassed by her father (November).
Among those who harassed five women, two were lecturers in a university, one was a university employee and two were teachers.
Eight women were harassed by their seniors in workplace, employers, colleagues and in-home employers. Two harassers were village headpersons.
More than half of the harassments were verbal and physical. 145 women were subjected to such kinds of harassment.
13 women were harassed by exhibitionists and voyeurists. Men harassed six women by interfering with what they wear. One harasser stole a woman's underpants (February).
Judicial process12 of the perpetrators had previous criminal records of harassment. 21 perpetrators were taken into custody. Six of them were released upon judicial control. At least 51 of them were arrested. An investigation was launched against at least 10 of them. One man was banned from going near the complainer woman for one month, another man was banned from two months. (April - İstanbul, May - İstanbul). One woman killed a perpetrator because of harassment (April - Adana). In Kocaeli, a university lecturer was dismissed from his job because of harassing a student. |
Child abuse
Men sexually abused 347 girls and 4 boys in 2018. The number of perpetrators reported on the media was 249.
Five girls were impregnated as a result of rape: January (1), February (2), June (2), September (1).
Seven of the girls had disabilities. Two of them were Syrians.
One child was forced to marry in May. There was an attempt to force a girl to marry in an unofficial religious ceremony.
In August, families of four girls attempted to marry them.
Four girls were forced to sex work in August, two in September.
Who abused the children?
37 girls were abused by ex-boyfriends, artisans, employers and managers. 23 girls were abused by school employees (canteen employee, cleaner). 18 girls were abused by school principals. 24 were abused by teachers.
Six of the harasser teachers were religion class teachers. Girls were abused by 13 perpetrators whom were they know from village or neighborhood. 17 percent of the abuses were perpetrated by fathers and brothers, 4 percent by step-fathers and grandfathers. 12 perpetrators were girls' relatives.
Three girls were abused by people whom they met on social media. Two were abused by doctors. Nine perpetrators were acquaintances of girls, 67 were people whom they did not know.
Where did men abused the children?
12 incidents of child abuses happened at home, 22 at or around schools and school buses, 15 at public places such as parks, hospitals, streets.
16 incidents were revealed by families, 17 by teachers. One incident was revealed by cameras, which a family set up in a home (January). Another incident was revealed after it was understood that the child was pregnant (February).
Judicial process122 perpetrators of child abuse were arrested. 54 were taken into custody. 29 were released upon judicial control. Investigations were launched against eight perpetrators. Five perpetrators who were civil servants were suspended from jobs. A broadcast ban was imposed on a case upon the perpetrator's request (February). No action was taken against a perpetrator who was a professional soldier. One perpetrator was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison. Bu the court ruled that the sentence shall not be executed because of the perpetrator's age (65) (December - Erzurum). |
Violence - injury
In 2018, 380 women were exposed to violence by men. At least 23 of them were seriously injured.
120 women were subjected to violence by their husbands or the men they married in an unofficial religious ceremony, 35 by their fiances or boyfriends, 18 by their family (father, son, brother) 14 by their relatives. 29 women were subjected to violence by their ex-husbands or ex boyfriends.
42 women were subjected to violence by various people, including governors, police officers, sports trainers, artisans, neighbors, thiefs students, hairdressers and patients.
Judicial process43 perpetrators who used violence against women were arrested. 16 perpetrators were released after testimony. Not any legal or administrative action was taken against seven perpetrators. 57 perpetrators were taken into custody. Eight perpetrators were released upon judiciary control. Legal and administrative investigations were launched aga,nst six perpetrators. At least 17 perpetrators were reported on the media as "wanted" or "at large". In June and July, two women killed the perpetrators. In February, the Ministry of Interior launched an investigation against Kırıkkale Governor Ö.Ç. for using violence. |
Forced sex work
Men forced 516 women and girls to sex work.
At least 243 of the women came from different countries such as Russia, Moldovia, Uganda, Uzbekistan. One of the women from Turkey who was forced to sex work had disabilities.
Judicial process237 perpetrators were arrested, 230 were taken into custody. One perpetrator was released upon judicial control. Two perpetrators were reported as "wanted" on the media. |

Trans murders in 2018
Four trans murders were committed in 2018. Names of the killed transgender people were Simge, Begüm, Esra, Kristina.
Because of homophobic hatred, men killed two men whom they thought were gay.
One trans woman was found dead in her home. Two trans women were claimed to commit suicide.
- A.K. (27) from Iran killed sex worker Kristina from Azerbaijan.
- Trans woman Nefes was found dead at her home in Ankara.
- Two trans women in İzmir and İstanbul were claimed to commit suicide. Both women were being threatened by their families.
- Five trans women were subjected to violence in Adana, Ankara, Samsun and İstanbul. Four of the perpetrators were men the women do not know, one was a police officer. Only the murder suspect was arrested.
- N.B.C attacked his neighbor trans woman K.A. with a bat, saying, "I don't want travesties in this building." The man reportedly attacked K.A because she was keeping a cat in the building's yard. N.B.C shot K.A. and her friend M.D. M.D. was wounded.
- In Samsun province, M.S. shot and killed his girlfriend trans woman Simge (24). M.S fled after the murder but eventually get caught.
- In Ankara, a man beat and then stabbed his ex-girlfriend trans woman S.K. When the man went to the kitchen to get a bigger knife, S.K. jumped from the balcony and ran away.
- In Bursa, sex worker and trans woman was found dead in a hotel room. She had been missing for ten days when she was found.
- In Ankara, a man battered his girlfriend trans woman E. because she wanted to break up. She filed a complaint with a medical report that states she was battered. The man was then into custody upon the complaint but was released after giving testimony.
- In İstanbul, trans sex worker Esra Ateş was killed in front of her house by her customer. The man cut the woman's throat.
- In Kocaeli, two men and a woman held trans women E.K., A.K. and M.Ç hostage at gunpoint. The perpetrators battered the women and stole the money and valuables. The women and the perpetrators knew each other previously.
- In Iğdır, T.R. (23) raped Şefika Sezer (74) at her home and stabbed to death. He stole the woman's money and mobile phone. (EMK/VK)
