The assailant who killed three people in an armed attack near the Ahmet Kaya Cultural Center in Paris was detained again yesterday (December 25).
William M., 69, was taken to a psyhiatry clinic following his detention after Friday's attack targeting Kurdish businesses in Paris's 10th arrondissement.
The doctors concluded that "it was appropriate for the aggressor to be detained" after the examination made at the psychiatry clinic.
The assailant was detained after the doctors' report and will be taken to will the courthouse to give his statement today (December 26).
Earlier, the Paris Prosecutor's Office said William M. had "pathological hatred" towards foreigners and perpetrated the attack in Paris "in order to commit murder and to kill foreigners."
The office also said the assailant had confessed that he had targeted Kurds intentionally.
A previous detention order for the aggressor was revoked since the doctor examining the aggressor concluded that "the health condition of the suspect was not fit for detention conditions," the prosecutors also said.
On Saturday there were demonstrations in Paris against the attack. Tensions rose when a man drove his car between the protesters and the police while displaying a "grey wolf" sign, which symbolizes Turkish extreme nationalism.
Many were injured during the demonstrations with some hospitalized.
What happened?
Three people were killed and three others were wounded in an armed attack near the Ahmet Kaya Cultural Center in Paris on Friday (December 23).
A 69-year-old suspect was detained after the attack.
Witnesses said that the suspect targeted the Culture center, a restaurant, and a hair-dresser and that he was neutralized by those in the hair-dresser.
Interior Minister of France, Gerald Darmanin said that the suspect targeted foreigners.
It was announced that the suspect who is a retired engine driver in railways attacked a migrant camp using a sword on December 8, 2021, in Paris and was charged with attempted murder.
The prosecutors opened an investigation for murder for this 2021 attack.
Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed that the aggressor was released one year after this attack. The reason for this release is not known. (RT/PE/VK)
