In at least seven provinces of Turkey, men threatened women with "killing" them or "inflicting violence" on them. In Uşak province, one man attempted to kill the wife of the child of his lover.
In Samsun, one woman exercised her right of self-defense against her husband who had been inflicting violence on her and killed the man.
2020 - 2021 In the first four months of 2020, men killed 83 women, harassed 40 women, abused 80 children and raped 23 women. Men forced at least 349 women to sex work and inflicted violence on at least 184 women. In the first four months of 2021, men killed 108 women, harassed 37 women, abused 49 children, raped 39 women. Men forced at least 256 women to sex work, inflicted violence on/ injured at least 253 women. In the first four months of 2021, the deaths of at least 74 women were reported in the press as "suspicious". Men killed at least seven children in this period. |
Feminicide/ Murder
In April 2021, men killed at least 17 women and one man who was with the women; this number was the same last April. Two women killed by men in April 2021 had protection or restraining orders. One man killed the woman after he had been released from prison.

The "excuses" of men for killing 11 women were not reported in the press. Men killed three women "out of jealousy", one woman because of "honor", one woman because "she had not prepared food before fast-breaking" and one woman because "she wanted to break up."

Three women were killed by their family members such as elder brothers and sons; one woman was killed by her friend who is a police officer. The degree of acquaintance/ relation between one woman and the male perpetrator was not reported in the press.

Men killed six women with firearms and nine women with sharp objects. Men killed one woman by crushing her head with a stone. The method of killing in one feminicide was not reported in the press.

Previously committed murders reported in the press in April * Emine Akkesen (34) was killed in Turkey's western province of Aydın in 2003. It was detected that she had been killed by a man named E.A. Sexual assault/ Rape

In April 2021, three of the women raped by men had mental disabilities. Five women were raped by male strangers, two women by her relatives and two women were raped by their husbands.
Men raped two women in places outside the house such as in the woods and car park. The scenes of the incident where seven women were sexually assaulted were not reported in the news.

Harassment
In April 2021, men harassed at least eight women. Last April, this number was nine.

Child abuse
In April 2021, men abused at least eight children, including boys. This figure was three in the same month last year.
Four children did not know the eight men who abused them. One child was abused by his/her cousin, one by his/her mother's boyfriend, and two children by their 10 neighbors.
Men abused seven children outside (streets, schools) and one child on social media.

Violence/injury
Men inflicted violence on at least 68 women in May. this figure was 38 in the same month last year.
Nine women who were subjected to violence by men were hospitalized in "critical" condition. Men had been systematically violent with at least four women.
One of the women who were subjected to violence by men was a citizen of Iran and one was from Somalia. One was not a citizen of Turkey but no information about which country she was from was reported in the press. Men inflicted violence on at least eight women despite "restraining" and "protection" orders.

At least 39 women were subjected to violence by their husbands, boyfriends and fiances. 10 women were subjected to violence from family members such as fathers and sons, one woman from her neighbors, one woman from a friend. The degree of acquaintance between 17 women and men who inflicted violence on them was not reported in the press.
Men inflicted violence on eight women because "they wanted to break up," five women because of "jealousy," one woman because of theft and one woman because she did not sell her animal. Men's "excuses" for inflicting violence on 53 women were not reported in the press.
Men injured 59 women by battering them, five women with sharp objects, and three women with firearms. Men injured one woman by running over her with a car.
Men inflicted violence on 16 women at home and 24 women outside (streets, agricultural fields). The places where men inflicted violence on 28 women were not reported in the press.

Explanation The bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report only covers women who lost their lives as a result of male violence. We do not include any violence cases or crimes that are not gender-based. Throughout the year, we keep track of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths of women in separate monthly tallies but do not add them to the number presented in the headline. At the end of the year, we examine these cases of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths to determine whether the crimes were gender-based. We add the gender-based incidents into the report. We do not include any murders in the reports that are committed by people with psychological disorders (such as murders committed by people with schizophrenia). We include suicide or suicide attempt incidents in the tally only if the woman was subjected to violence/ systematic violence in her past. We cover these suicide incidents in a separate category and do not add suicide cases to the number presented in the headline. In addition, we don't include femicide cases that occur in a mass murder in which the woman was not directly targeted under the condition that the debated incident is not gender based either. Occupations of the offenders only included in the reports when the incident of violence is related to the occupation of the offender. For example, "Woman was murdered at home by his husband, who is a professional soldier." We add the violence committed on children by men, to make the extent of violence visible. |
