On the occasion of June 5 World Environment Day, a demonstration was held in Adana, southern Turkey, against the pollution caused by imported plastic waste in the city.
Members of the Adana Bar, the Adana Medical Chamber, the Adana Chamber of Architects, the AHBAP Association, the Voice of Social Life Association and the We Are From Adana Association gathered near a water treatment facility in the Seyhan district.
After reading out a joint statement, the people formed a human chain along a water canal where plastic waste is dumped.
Dr. Selahattin Menteş, the head of the medical chamber, said human health and environment will incur great damage if waste imports are not banned.
Semih Gökayaz, the chair of the bar association, said they will continue to struggle for a "democratic life that values human rights and environment."
Since 2018, Turkey has been the top plastic waste importer of Europe. Most of the imported waste is dumped in Adana.
