Turkey ranks first among the number of countries convicted for rights violations by the European Court of Human Rights in between 1959-2011.

The majority of judgements delivered by the European Court of Human Rights in 2011 concerned Turkey. Most of these decisions were related to violations of the right to a fair trial and to an effective investigation as well as long trial periods and ill-treatment.

The AKP government announced that economic relations with Israel were going to be maintained as usual. The Turkish government had declared to put diplomatic relations with Israel on ice on 2 September related to the UN report on the Mavi Marama raid.

The OECD report on the changing family structure yielded alarming results for the Turkish society. The participation of women in work life is on constant decline, young people are uneducated and unemployed, a third of all children are not happy.

15,200 Files against Turkey Pending at ECHR
In 2010, a total of 15,200 applications filed against Turkey were pending before the European Court of Human Rights. Only Russia has more files pending. Turkey is the country with the highest number of convictions regarding violations of rights at the ECHR.

The 2010 report of the Committee to Protect Journalists criticized punishments handed down to Turkish journalists on the grounds of their reports about the Kurdish question or the Ergenekon case. The report also drew attention to the slow procedures of the Dink murder case.

Turkey has to pay € 16,000 in compensation to Faruk Temel, member of the People's Democracy Party, by reason of a breach of the right to freedom of expression. German national Mehmet Desde was also compensated by the ECHR related to torture allegations.

USA Wants to Keep Nuclear Weapons in Turkey
A cable published on WikiLeaks confirmed that the USA has nuclear weapons in Turkey, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Gordon from the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, ""If the nuclear weapons will be withdrawn from the 3 countries, it might become politically very difficult to retain Turkey's stock of nuclear weapons".

Turkey in Free Fall
Turkey ranges in 138th position among 178 countries reviewed for the World Press Freedom Index issued by Reporters without Borders. This is a further decline compared to last year's 122nd rank. RSF criticized the quickly increasing number of sanctions against journalists.

Activists Arrived in Turkey
466 people who had been detained by Israel after an attack on aid ships heading for Gaza have arrived in Turkey. The bodies of 9 people who were killed in the attack were brought to Istanbul, all of them are of Turkish nationality. 17 injured activists are in Ankara.

Racist State Report Withdrawn from Publication
A report by the State Auditing Commission (DDK) on shipyards has been found to contain racist descriptions of Greeks, such as “lazy” and “a genetic hostility towards Turks”. When reported, parts of the reports were taken off the website.
