The details of the legal amendment expected to be introduced to the right of alimony have been reported in the press. Awaiting to be reviewed by Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ, the amendment reportedly plans to introduce a time limit to the right of alimony after divorce.
As reported by Gizem Karakış from daily Hürriyet, the time during which alimony is to be paid will be limited to 5 years for marriages that lasted less than 2 years and to 12 years for those that continued for 5 to 10 years. With this amendment, as it is reported, it will be ensured that there is an upper limit to the payment of alimony depending on the duration of marriage.
Accordingly, the related law is expected to be amended in such a way that the duration of alimony payment will be determined based on the duration of marriage for marriages that lasted more than 15 years.
Depending on the circumstances of the parties, it will be at the discretion of the judge to set the time limit. The judge will consider the "job and income situations of spouses" in making this decision.
Women call for protest
Amid these reports revealing that the government, with its 6th Judicial Package, is planning to limit the duration of alimony payment and introduce an intermediation system to the family law in Turkey, the Women are Strong Together team have called for a protest demonstration.
In the face of this expected legal amendment, the women's group has called on women to be at the Eminönü Pier in Kadıköy on February 12:
"Following the withdrawal from the İstanbul Convention with a midnight decree, we continue raising our voices against those who want to restrict our legal rights, lives and freedom. We meet at the Kadıköy Eminönü Pier on February 12 Saturday at 4 pm." (EMK/SD)
