Ankara 7th High Criminal Court acquitted today 13 defendants who were charged with being a RedHack member and plotting a cyber attack on Ankara Police Headquarters.
“The court didn’t rule that the crime was not proven. The court ruled that ‘no crime has been formed’,” Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) Ankara Province Division Chairman Murat Yılmaz told bianet.
He also added that the prosecutor expressed the acquittal of defendants upon the expert report and the court admitted the request.
What happened?
In 2012 a case has been launched against 13 individuals for being a member of RedHack cyber group and plotting a cyber attack on the website of Ankara Police Headquarters.
Charged with “being a member of an armed terrorist organization” and “committing various cyber crimes”, most of the defendants remained in prison for 9 months within the investigation.
While Ankara 13th High Criminal Court released all defendants on the first hearing of the case, an expert report was demanded whether the defendants really hacked the police headquarters website and acquired the information of police officers as well as weapon license holders’ names, police reports and other intelligence data.
Experts conducted a research on every defendants’ computer, coming to the conclusion that no trace or IP logs were discovered to proved such claims of hacking. (AS/BM)
