According to reports bianet compiled from local and national newspapers, news sites and agencies, men killed at least 31 women; raped 15; harassed 25; sexually abused 33 girls and inflicted violence on 45 women in December.
Two women heavily wounded “survived by feigning death”.
A 60-year-old man, who was suspended from teaching in the past due to child abuse, harassed a 21-year-old woman with an intellectual disability.
In 2017, men killed 286 women and girls; raped 101 women; harassed 248; sexually harassed 377 girls and inflicted violence on 218 women.
Murder
Men killed 31 women, five girls and two men who tried to prevent murders in December.
Other than these murders, perpetrator of a killed woman couldn’t be identified; two women were found suspiciously dead; one woman allegedly committed suicide; one woman who was attempted to be forced to get married attempted suicide.
22.5% of the women were killed for attempting to divorce, break up or rejecting the proposition to recommence the relationship.
Two of the killed women were trans.
One woman was taken out of a women’s shelter by her husband who had recently inflicted violence on her. Three women had filed complaints several times but no precaution was taken for women to be protected.
52% of the women were killed with firearms.
12 women were killed with pistol; 4 by rifle; 11 with knife; 2 by being strangled; 1 with cleaver; 1 by being thrown off the balcony. The method of one murder wasn’t covered by the media.
71% of the women were killed by their partners or ex-partners.
12 women were killed by their husbands of official marriage; one by husband of religious marriage; three by their ex-husbands; seven by boyfriends; two by men whom they rejected to commence a relationship; one by friend; one by her husband’s relative; two by sons; one by a male stranger who came as a customer. Acquaintance level of two murderers with women wasn’t reported in the media.
Three murders were committed in public places.
Five of the woman murderers committed suicide following the murders, three others attempted suicide.

Rape
15 incidents of rape against women were covered by the media in December.
40% of the raped women were not citizens of Turkey. One of them was a sex worker. 93% of the rapists were strangers.
One woman was raped by her boyfriend; one by a minibus driver; one by a male stranger who came as a customer; 13 by male strangers.
Two of the rapists had criminal record of sexual assault.
Only four of the 13 rapists were arrested: a business person who raped his girlfriend was detained and then released; a man who raped a sex worker was released on probation. It wasn’t reported in the media that whether legal steps were taken against other perpetrators.
The cities where rape incidents occurred are Adana (1), Eskişehir (1), İstanbul (10), Kayseri (1), Kocaeli (1), Samsun (1), Tekirdağ (1).
Harassment
25 incidents of harassment against women were covered by the media in December.
12% of the harassment incidents occurred on public transportations.
72% of the harassers were male strangers.
One woman was harassed by her employer; four by coworkers; one by neighbor; one by assistant bus driver; one by sports trainer; one by a male stranger who came as a customer; one by a male stranger who came as a repairer; 15 by male strangers.
23 of the harassers had criminal records of crimes such as child abuse, sexual assault and murder. Five of the 22 perpetrators were arrested. Another harasser was arrested following public reaction after he was released. Four women exposed the harassers on the social media as any legal action wasn’t taken. Two harassers are pending trial without arrest. The judicial process about the other perpetrators wasn’t covered by the media.

Child abuse
Men sexually abused at least 33 girls in December. One girl got pregnant but she couldn’t have an abortion since the legal period, which is 20 weeks, passed.
42% of the child abuse incidents occurred at places such as school, in front of school or shuttle. 36% of the girls were abused by their teachers and school staff. Abuse of four children were revealed by the efforts of counsellors.
One child was abused by her elder brother; two by relatives; one by her mother’s boyfriend; one by her trainer; one by father; one by brother; two by neighbors; one by a man whom she described as godfather; one by minibus driver; six by school technicians; six by teachers; one by shuttle driver; one by men she met on the social media; four by male strangers. Acquaintances of four abusers with the children weren’t covered by the media.
20 of the 25 perpetrators were arrested. A man, who forcibly attempted to get her on his vehicle, was released even though he had criminal record of eight different crimes. The judicial process concerning the other perpetrators wasn’t reported in the media.

Violence
Men injured at least 45 women in December.
27% of the women were heavily wounded. It was reported in the media that two women one of whom was attacked by her husband and one of whom was attacked by her ex-husband, “survived by feigning death”.
26% of the violence incidents occurred at public places such as bar, street, workplace, café, bus.
Two women were subjected to violence despite the protection orders.
15.5% of the women were killed for attempting to divorce, break up or rejecting the proposition to recommence the relationship.
A man who left prison by permission tortured his wife telling her “I’ll make you the second Özgecan case in Mersin”.
A woman, who was subjected to violence despite protection order and is still in critical condition, was forced to get married at early age.
64% of the women were subjected to violence by her partners or ex-partners.
Three women were inflicted violence by their fathers; four by ex-husband; one by ex-fiancée; one by ex-boyfriend; one by landlord; one by employer; 21 by husband; one by neighbor; one by father of her opponent in a sports competition; one by her son; one by a man whom she rejected proposal to commence a relationship; two by boyfriend; five by male strangers. Acquaintance of two perpetrators with women wasn’t reported in the media.
23 women were battered, four them were batter with objects. Six women were injured with knife; four with pistol; one with rifle; one with a chemical substance. One man drove his car on a woman, and another man tried to set the car on fire while the woman was inside. One woman was tortured. Two women were threatened with death. One was taken hostage.
