According to data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male perpetrators left 17 women, 2 men killed, 13 women and teenager girls raped, 13 women battered and 13 women and teenager girls harassed in April.
59 percent of murder victims were slain by their spouse or ex-husbands, and 54 percent of rape perpetrators knew their victims, the report revealed.
2 women were murdered despite their complaints to a prosecutor. 2 women were severely battered despite court restraining order. 1 woman was stabbed with a knife prior to her divorce trial at the courthouse. Another woman was raped by a perpetrator who was released after the implementation of 3rd Judicial Package.
In 2013, male perpetrators left 50 women killed; 51 women and teenager girls raped; 78 women wounded; and 68 women harassed.
In April 2013, male perpetrators left 14 women, 2 men and 1 infant killed; 16 women and teenager girls raped; 25 women and teenager girls wounded; and 28 women harassed.
Murder
In April, male perpetrated violence left 17 women, 2 men dead across 13 different cities in Turkey. 59 percent of murder victims were slain by their spouse or ex-husbands.
Most of the perpetrators in April were the spouse (7) of slain women. Other murder perpetrators included ex-husband (3), son-in-law (1), lover (1), ex-lover (1), harasser (1), friend's lover (1), brother (1), ex-lover's wife and family (1).
2 women were murdered despite their complaints to a prosecutor - one male murderer committed his act during a jail permit, other has recently been released. Following the murders overall in Turkey, two men committed suicide and another attempted to do so. 3 men surrendered to police.
8 women were murdered with a pistol and 6 with a knife, sources said. A woman was battered to death and another one was chopped dead with an axe. Another woman was reported to fall off a balcony while running away from her husband who shot his son.
The murderers were aged between 27 to 70 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 19 to 70.
Female murder cases were reported in the following cities: Ankara, Antalya (2), Bursa, Denizli, Düzce, İstanbul (3), İzmir (2), Konya, Manisa, Mardin, Mersin, Nevşehir and Osmaniye.
Rape
In April, men raped 13 women and teenager girls across 10 cities in Turkey.
1 woman was raped by a perpetrator who was released after the implementation of 3rd Judicial Package.
54 percent of rape perpetrators knew their victims, the report revealed.
Most of the rapists in April were unknown to their victims (6). Other rapists of April included friends (5), brother (1), brother-in-law (1), men unknown to their victims.
61 percent of rapes occurred in apartments in April. Rape venues included houses (7), elevator (1), on the street (4), and several locations (1).
After the rapes, one victim was stabbed by her father and another by her rapist. Another victim's brother has been raped. At least 26 men were arrested following the rape cases in April.
The rapists were aged between 19 to 37 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 13 to 26.
April rape cases were reported in the following cities: Adana, Elazığ, Erzurum, İstanbul (2), İzmir, Kocaeli (2), Muğla, Samsun (2) Tekirdağ and Tokat.
Battery-Assault
In April, 13 violence against women cases were reported across 7 different cities in Turkey.
One woman was wounded severely with a knife despite court restraining order, while another woman was stabbed by her husband before the divorce trial at the courthouse.
61 percent of male violence cases were reported as attempted murder.
6 men attacked with a knife and another man attacked her victim with a pistol. One man attempted to throw his wife out of the balcony. 4 women were battered with a knife, another one was put through torture. One male violence perpetrator surrendered to police, another one was arrested.
77 percent of female victims suffered from either their current (5) or ex-husbands (5). Other male aggressors included lover (1), sex client (1). Another man claimed to have attacked a woman saying that he confused her with a transvestite.
The aggressor men were aged between 18 to 42 years old while their victims' ages differed from 19 to 65.
Violence against women was reported in the following cities: Adana, Antalya (2), Antep (2), Çanakkale, İstanbul (2), İzmir (2) and Samsun (3).
Harassment
In April, 13 harassment cases were reported across 8 different cities in Turkey.
69 percent of harassers knew their victims, the report revealed.
April harassers were identified as teachers (7), co-worker (1), neighbor (1), and strangers (4).
Most harassment cases were reported at school (6). Other cases included residential house (2), elevator (2), student residence (1), workplace (1) and on the street (1).
Following the incidents, one woman was stabbed with a knife. Another harasser attacked the brother of female victim, leaving him severely wounded. The workplace harasser was fired.
April harassment cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (5), Antalya, Bursa, Diyarbakır, İstanbul (2), Kocaeli, Konya and Ordu.
Regional distribution
In April, 56 cases of violence against women, murder, attempted murder, harassment, rape, injury and child abuse were reported across 25 provinces. Most of these incidents were reported in Istanbul.
56 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (16 cases - 29%), Central Anatolia (4 cases – 7%), Aegean (9 cases – 16%), Mediterranean (13 cases – 23%), Black Sea (8 cases – 14 %), Eastern-Anatolia (2 cases – 4%) and South-Eastern Anatolia (4 cases – 7%). (ÇT/BM)
