Adem Kara, 21, was killed after being shot by the police yesterday (August 1) in a livestock market in the Midyat district of the predominantly Kurdish-populated city of Mardin in southeast Türkiye.
Kara was taken to the Mardin Training and Research Hospital after being shot, but could not be saved. His body was delivered to his family after the autopsy last night. His funeral was held at the Kalo Cemetery in Midyat
One police officer was detained in relation to the incident. There were four officers at the scene, according to eyewitnesses.
Witnesses said at least three shots were fired from behind Kara, with one bullet hitting him.
The bullet hit the lower part of his neck, according to the autopsy report.
"They should have caught him"
Selman Kara, the elder brother of Adem Kara, told Mezopotamya Agency (MA), citing eyewitnesses, that his brother attempted to escape from a police car after being detained.
Kara previously served prison time because of a criminal offense.
"And the police officer shot at him from behind. They wounded him. The police officers didn't chase him. No matter what, the police have no right to shoot. They shouldn't have fire shots. Or they could fire at her feet.
"They should have caught him. He should have served his sentence, whatever it was. What right do they have to kill him? Is this justice? They will do this to another person in the future."
Criticizing that the governor's office did not make a statement about the incident, he said, "Who cares about the poor? They don't care."
Hasine Kara, Arslan's mother, said, "They killed my son. The state killed my son."
According to a report by the Baran Tursun Foundation, 404 people were killed by the police in similar incidents between 2007 and 2020. (AS/VK)
