The Human Rights Association (İHD) and the Turkish Human Rights Foundation (TİHV) issued the report on human rights violations for the year 2009.
Right to life
Death for ignoring the "stop warning": Security forces killed a total of 36 people "by reason of not obeying the stop warning" or because of exceeding their authority to use a firearm; 71 people got injured.
Village guards: 61 people were killed by village guards, another 46 were injured. This number includes the deaths caused by the Mardin massacre.
Prisons: 36 people died in prison.
Detention: 6 people died in detention.
Armed conflicts: 50 security guards and 91 armed militants died in armed conflicts. This figure includes the deaths of 21 soldiers due to land mines and other explosives.
Civilians: A total of 22 civilians, 8 children and 14 adults, died because of land mines, explosives or remnants of war. 41 civilians were injured.
Asylum seekers and refugees: 23,014 asylum seekers and refugees were taken into detention in 2009. 33 asylum seekers and refugees died, 30 were injured.
Torture
305 cases of torture in detention were registered in 2009, 358 cases of torture were reported for non-official areas. 34 torture incidents were carried out by village guards. Torture cases in prison amounted to 397. 10 incidents of torture were registered related to private security forces. (TK/VK)
