According to a report released by Worker Health and Work Security Assembly, at least 1203 workers were killed from work-related injuries in 2013 (as of December 26).
Out of 1203, 59 were children and 101 were women.
The sectors with most casualties were listed as follows: construction, agriculture, transportation, trade, mining, steel, chemistry and textile.
The assembly released the following statement:
“As tensions deepen between the opposing forces of the governing powers, we have recently observed the revealing of all sorts of corruption elements including shoeboxes. Following these incidents, 3 ministers resigned. But also Faruk Çelik was appointed as Turkey’s new labor minister. He previously found 3 percent salary rise sufficient and claimed that a worker could live well off with 800 liras. On the other hand, Nihat Zeybekçi became Turkey’s new economy minister. He previously said that workplace accidents are the sign of civilization.
“In addition that that, we have a prime minister who said that police forces would hold their duties albeit against women and children. He always orders for force against right claims. You all are not only responsible behind all the corruption, graft, degeneration and violence, but you are also responsible for the death of 1203 workers." (NV/BM)
