Cumhuriyet trial, where four of the 20 defendants were under arrest, was held yesterday (March 9) at Silivri Campus by İstanbul 27th Heavy Penal Court.
The cour has ordered release of Ahmet Şık and Murat Sabuncu, and continuation of arrest for Akın Atalay and Ahmet Kemal Aydoğdu.
At the Cumhuriyet trial, the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper Murat Sabuncu and Chairperson of the Executive Board and attorney Akın Atalay have been under arrest for 495 days, reporter Ahmet Şık was for 434 days and Ahmet Kemal Aydoğdu, who has been arrested due to his tweets, for 444 days.
The trial will resume on March 16.
Şık was previously ordered out of the courtroom and trial was moved to Silivri
At the fifth hearing of the Cumhuriyet trial conducted by İstanbul 27th Heavy Penal Court on December 25, the court board did not let the arrested journalist Ahmet Şık speak, interrupted his statement and ordered him out of the courtroom. The board then decided to move the trial to Silivri.

Seeing that the first hearing of the trial on July 24 was attended by a large number of people, the court board previously decided to move the second hearing of the trial on September 11 to Silivri. However, they later reversed their decision and moved the trial back to İstanbul Çağlayan Courthouse.
The second hearing of the trial held at Silivri Campus was also attended by many lawyers, politicians, journalists, participants and representatives from rights organizations.
For the sixth hearing of the trial today as well, a large number of representatives from rights organizations, lawyers and journalists have come to Silivri to watch the hearing.
What happened?On October 31, 2016, İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office began investigating Cumhuriyet Foundation executives on charges of "Making publications that justify July 15 coup attempt" and "committing crime for PKK/KCK (Kurdistan Workers' Party/Kurdistan Communities Union) and FETÖ/PDY (Fethullahist Terrorist Organization/Parallel State Organization) as non members". The investigation was initially launched by prosecutor Murat İnam who was at the same time a suspect in the trial of "FETÖ (Fethullahist Terrorist Organization)". Five hearings have been held in the trial so far.
