Two Police Officers Suspended under Torture Allegations
The 2 brothers Yilmaz K. (28) and Ali Hıdır K. (24) filed a criminal complaint at the Mersin Public Prosecutor's Office against several police offers because of exposure of violence in the Republic Police Headquarters. The brothers had been arrested under allegations of driving a dangerous vehicle and possessing a weapon without licence on 15 August this year.
Hüseyin Aksoy, governor of the city of Mersin, announced that he suspended the 2 police officers accused of harassment from office and that he requested inspectors from the Ministry of the Interior.
Kicking and beating people lying on the floor
Footage of the incident broadcasted in the media shows several police officers attacking the 2 brothers by kicking and beating them in the corridor of the police station. The video reveals that the police officers continued the assault after the brothers had collapsed on the floor.
Governor Aksoy announced that Yılmaz and Ali Hıdır K. did not hand in a petition concerning the Governorship and the Chief Police Department. Aksoy underlined, "We follow the matter up. As the Mersin Governorship we are sensitive about human rights. We examine the subject to the smallest detail. If there is an element of crime, we will do what is necessary". (EÖ/VK)
