A magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred in the western city of İzmir in Türkiye early today (October 4).
The Minister of Interior Affairs, Süleyman Soylu had announced in the morning that there was no loss of life and said, "Thirty-one people applied to hospitals for various reasons as a result of panic in the magnitude 4.9 earthquake this morning centered in İzmir's Buca district, with three still under treartment and one seriously injured."
It was later announced that one person died of heart attack during the earthquake and that a 18 year old university student who jumped off the balcony of his hpuse lost his life later in hospital.
The minaret of the Selahattin Oğlu Mosque was toppled in the earthquake in the Kubilay neighborhood of the Konak district. There were short power cuts in some parts of the city following the earthquake. The earthquake was also felt in the surrounding provinces.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) announced on its website that the earthquake occurred at 03:29 a.m. and was centered in Buca district of İzmir. The earthquake depth was registered as 14,47 kilometers.
Minister of Interior Affairs Süleyman Soylu announced that 31 people applied to the hospitals for various reasons as a result of panic in the earthquake. Soylu said that three of those injured were still being treated and one was seriously injured.
AFAD announced that 13 aftershocks occurred after the 4,9 magnitude earthquake until 04:30 a.m. the largest of which ws 2,4 magnitude. AFAD also announced that there were no reported losses of life and that two citizens were injured as a result of jumping off from high in panic.
Two years ago, another earthquake had hit İzmir on October 30, 2020, killed 117 and injured more than a thousand people. (EMK/PE/VK)
