Turkey has submitted its report on human rights that will be examined by the UN Human Rights Council for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) that will take place between January 20-31.
In the periodic review involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States. The UPR is a state-driven process under the auspices of the Human Rights Council. Under this mechanism, the human rights situation of all UN Member States is reviewed every five years.
The UPR provides the opportunity for each state to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situations in their countries and to fulfil their human rights obligations.
Turkey's report covers numerous topics, including the promotion and protection of human rights, minorities, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, right to peaceful assembly, prohibition of torture, right to education, women's rights, children's rights, rights of the people with disabilities, and refugees, asylum seekers and human trafficking.
The Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK), which was founded by the government in 2016, had called on civil society organizations to contribute to the report. (AS/VK)
