Thousands of people have been stranded in their vehicles on the Tarsus-Adana-Gaziantep (TAG) Highway since late yesterday (January 18) as snowstorms hit the region.
Traffic stopped in 115 locations due to heavy snowfall and blizzards and in one location because of an avalanche, according to the Directorate General of Highways.
Many people stuck on the highways called for help on social media.
Gaziantep Governor Davut Gül said about 2,000 people have been rescued while efforts are underway to rescue the remaining people. The now depth in the province exceeded 40 centimeters, he noted.
The main reason for the disruption of the traffic was semi-trailer truck accidents, added the governor.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) announced that roads to more than 700 villages from southeastern to northwestern parts of the country were closed due to bad weather.
The snowfall that affected large parts of the country will continue today, according to the State Meteorological Service (MGM). Schools were suspended today in parts of or throughout 47 of the81 provinces of the country.
