The Şirin Tekeli Research Award 2017 organized by Sabancı University Gender and Women's Studies Center of Excellence (SU Gender) with the aim to support and encourage gender based studies have been granted to 14 people.
Doctoral students and researchers who got their doctoral degrees in the last 15 years, could apply for the award.
Ten awards consisting of three research and seven research encouragement awards, have been granted within the project.
Şirin Tekeli Research Award 2017
Feminist, activist, translator, academic and writer Şirin Tekeli had lost her life on June 2017.
SU Gender initiated the Şirin Tekeli Research Award in order to honour Tekeli's legacy, who who was one of the leading figures in women's and gender studies in Turkey and lit the way for many researchers, academics and activist till today. The award aims to support gender and women's studies, and hopes to open a substantial and an inspiring space for researchers to diversify and share this legacy.
The research proposals were reviewed by an inter-university electoral board based on international academic criteria.
The 2017 Electoral board's members were Yeşim Arat, Fatmagül Berktay, Sibel Irzık, Deniz Kandiyoti and Ayşe Öncü.
The three reseach awards were granted to Demet Polat, Ezgi Burgan and Aylin Demir. The seven research encouragement awrads were granted to Fatih Altuğ, Coşku Çelik, Ecehan Balta, Sezen Çilengir, Arzu İnan, Rüya Telli, Özgür Sevgi Göral, İclal Ayşe Küçükkırca, Yıldız İpek Mehmetoğlu, Yonca Güneş Yücel and Gözde Orhan.
About Şirin Tekeli
Şirin Tekeli, who passed away in June 2017, left a rich legacy behind. Besides her books Women and Socio-political Life (İletişim, 1982) that she wrote in 1978 as an associate professor at İstanbul University, and Women in Turkey in the 1980s from the Perspective of Women (İletişim, 1990) as one of the first interdisciplinary compilations of feminist women's studies in Turkey, Şirin Tekeli pioneered the establishment of gender and women's studies in Turkey and in Turkish language with the feminist articles that she wrote in Somut newspaper in the early 1980s, the translations of more than 20 books focusing on women and democracy from French and English, and the articles that she wrote in international academic journals. Şirin Tekeli has also been a pioneer and a promoter of many steps for the institutionalization and empowerment of civil society, feminist movement, and gender equality policies. She played an active role in the petition campaign demanding the enforcement of The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) between 1985 and 1990, the Women's Solidarity March against Violence, the Kâriye Festival, the Purple Needle Campaign, and the Civil Law reforms. She was amongst the founders of the Human Rights Association in 1986, the Women's Library and Information Center Foundation in 1989, the Purple Roof Women's Shelter Foundation in 1990, the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly in 1993, and the Association for Support of Women Candidates (KA-DER) in as well as the Women Initiative for Peace (WINPEACE) by Greek and Turkish Women in 1997. |
