Five years ago today (July 20), a suicide bomb attack claimed the lives of 33 people who came together in the district of Suruç in Turkey's southeastern province of Urfa to bring toys to children in Kobanê, Syria.
Just as their loved ones did on July 20, 2015 before they lost their lives following a statement for the press, the groups gathered in front of the Amara Cultural Center in Suruç as part of a commemoration ceremony organized by the Suruç Families' Initiative earlier today.
However, the police intervened against the group. Sharing a message and video on its Twitter account later in the day, the Initiative has announced that they could make their statement afterwards.

HDK: We commemorate them with longing
The Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDP) Justice Commission and Youth Assembly and the Human Rights Association (İHD) have released written statements in memory of the 33 deceased "travellers of hope".
"Demanding justice for Suruç means demanding the establishment of social peace," the HDK Justice Commission has said in its statement, noting that "the perpetrators of the massacre need to be put on trial and everyone who has shut their eyes to the massacre as well as those who did not take precautions have to be brought to justice."
In its statement, the HDK Youth Assembly has also said, "We promise that we will keep them alive in our struggle and growing hope for freedom."
İHD: We will not let them be forgotten
"It has been five years since the massacre occured," the İHD has reminded the public in its statement and briefly said the following:
"Yakup Şahin, the arrested defendant of the case, was not brought to hearings even for once and even though there is clear evidence that the murderers were supported from inside the state and they had links with the defendants of October 10 Ankara Massacre, no steps have been taken to reveal the truths and the real responsible parties in the case file.
"But each and every hearing was turned into torture for the complainants who came to harm in the explosion and lost their loved ones. They have been punished because they do not stop following up the murderers."
The İHD has also reminded the public that the next hearing of the Suruç Massacre case will be held on August 18.
