The lift of age requirement for retirement for those who started employment before September 8, 1999, was unanimously approved in the parliament of Türkiye.
President and Justice and Development Party chairperson Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had earlier announced the intention to lift the minimum age requirement for retirement of 58 for women and 60 for men, which was introduced in 1999.
"With the arrangement, nearly 2 million and 250 thousand citizens will have the right to retire," Erdoğan had told a press conference on December 28.
Yesterday, all opposition parties voted in favor in the vote taken late at night and the new regulation was approved unanimously.
There had been a years-long campaign for the lifting of the retirement age requirement for those who started employment before 1999 by those shortly called EYT (those hindered from retirement due to age).
The government has estimated the cost of the plan at about 250 billion lira (13,4 billion dollars) in the first year, it was announced earlier.
The women who worked for 20 years and men who worked for 25 years with their social security contributions paid will be able to retire immediately with the new regulation. (PE)
