Aiming to draw attention to the refugee deaths on the borders, especially in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece, No Border Camp, which meets in a different country every year with international participation, tries to increase the solidarity by gathering together the activists struggling for refugee rights from all over the world.
The Refugee Association and the Human Rights Agenda Association, which have organized this year's camp, expect wide participation from Russia, Austria, Greece, Israel and many countries.
410 individuals have died in the Aegean Sea in the last 14 years, 402 individuals are missing
While emphasizing that the refugees who are trying to get to the European Community countries use two main routes, the Turkish Greek border and the Aegean Sea, the No Border Camp also draws attention to the grievances the refugees experience on these routes.
For most refugees crossing Turkey, especially during the winter months, the journey from Turkey to Greece via the Aegean Sea result in bodily punishment, physical injuries, apprehension, repatriation, death, confinement in refugee camps under inhumane conditions, being abandoned to death.
The camp initiative reminds that between 1994 and 2008, 410 people have died in the Aegean Sea and 402 people are still missing.
“No Border Camp” is not concerned with the problem for the usual security reasons of the “high politics”, but is rather interested in discussing the problems of migration, immigrants and refugees from the perspectives of the human rights, the sustainable development, ending the wars, the regional integration and etc. The camp will meet at Dikili, a town by the Aegean Sea, to the north of Izmir, between the dates of 3-7 September.
