Due to the ever-increasing cost of producing bread, a majority of the İstanbul's Chamber of Commerce voted in favor of increasing the price of a kilo of bread from 19,05 lira (0,96 Euro) to 25 lira (1,26 Euro).
This means that a 210-gram loaf of bread in January will increase from 4 lira (0,20 euro) to 5 lira (0,25 euro). In one year, the price of bread rose by 71,4 percent. However, in many parts of İstanbul, bread is sold for 5 liras.
The İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Halk Ekmek General Manager Okan Gedik commented on the price hike, stating that they tried to compensate for a long time all kinds of costs in order not to raise the price of bread.
"Since in 2023, the minimum wage, energy expenses, and flour prices, the most significant contributions to the price of bread, determine the price increase policy of İstanbul Halk Ekmek. As a public subsidiary, we aim to protect our prices as much as possible, in line with the well-being and interests of our citizens, without making a profit. (WM/VK)
