In an unexpected turn of events during a natural gas excavation in Denizli, western Turkey, an ancient sarcophagus has been unearthed, leaving archaeologists and historians intrigued by its potential historical significance.
The discovery occurred in the Kale district, where excavation work was underway, as reported by Anadolu Agency (AA). As the construction machine's bucket delved into the ground, it unexpectedly snagged the lid of the sarcophagus, putting the excavation on hold. Authorities quickly intervened to protect the relic, recognizing its possible value as a historical artifact.
Kale Mayor, Mehmet Salih Sağınç, affirmed that the municipality has taken all necessary measures to safeguard the sarcophagus and ensure its preservation. He expressed their commitment to protecting such valuable historical finds.
Highlighting the historical significance of the region, the mayor noted that it is home to the Tabea Ancient City. To ascertain more about the sarcophagus's historical attributes, experts from the Denizli Museum Directorate will meticulously examine the find. (TY/VK)
