Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Heiko Maas came to Turkey today (September 5) for a two-day official visit.
In his statement he made before departing for Ankara, Maas said, “Given the deep and close ties between our societies and the many different interests we share, it is our clear intention to continue to work hard to improve relations. With my trip to Turkey, I want to play my part” and underscored the large number of detentions in Turkey.
Maas also noted that he would “address these issues frankly”.
FM Spokesperson recalled Kavala
Nils Schmid, the foreign policy spokesman for the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) stated that he was concerned of citizens of Germany as well as rights violations in Turkey.
"Thousands of people are in prison," he said, and referring to imprisoned rights activist and business person Kavala Schmid added, "an immensely important partner when it comes to cultural exchange between Turkey and Germany."
Syria is on the agenda as well
It was reported that Maas will discuss also the Syrian issue with Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. (PT/TK)
