The court has ordered continuation of arrest in trial of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Diyarbakır MP Çağlar Demirel.
Being arrested in Kocaeli Type F High Security Prison, Demirel didn’t attend the trial held at Diyarbakır 5th Heavy Penal Court due to her medical condition.
Speaking first at the hearing, the Public Prosecutor demanded continuation of arrest.
Speaking after the prosecutor, Demirel’s attorneys Reyhan Yalçındağ Baydemir, Mesut Beştaş and Mehmet Emin Aktar said “Arrest of our client contravenes law and constitution. Arrest of our client is not merely a right violation but also it constitutes a crime according to the Turkish Penal Code”.
HDP MPs Ahmet Yıldırım, Ziya Pir and Feleknas Uca as well watched the hearing.
From 10 to 23 years in prison is demanded for Demirel, who is being charged with “terror organization membership”, “propagandizing for an illegal organization” and “attending illegal meetings and demonstrations”.
Demirel was arrested on December 13.
There are 10 HDP MPs including the co-chairs behind bars. (YY/TK)
