Greenpeace Mediterranean has released a statement regarding the Human Rights Day, underpinning that climate change is a human rights issue.
Legal Counsel Deniz Bayram, who is responsible for Greenpeace Mediterranean Projects, has said that climate change cannot be dissociated from human rights:
"Climate change, as the greatest global threat, puts basic living standards of individuals and societies and rights to live and food security into danger.
"The facts that extreme weather events originating from climate change cause deaths and great destruction, number of climate refugees reaches millions, food on our plate gets lesser and more expensive, biodiversity slowly diminishes tell us a single thing: Demanding justice of climate against climate change on Human Rights Day is vital."
'We are responsible for future generations'
Bayram has also said that fossil fuel companies, which have not stopped activities damaging the Earth for decades and hidden the facts regarding climate change, and governments which allow these are responsible for the threats which the future generations will face.
Bayram has called on all the governments participating in 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to compensate for the losses to this day in a just manner.
COP24 is being held between December 3 and 14 in Katowice, Poland. (PT/VK)
