Armenians living in İstanbul have joined the demonstrations held against Prime Minister of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan.
According to a report by İşhan Erdinç from Agos weekly newspaper, the Armenians living in İstanbul convened at Kumkapı Virgin Mary Church to protest Sargsyan in the afternoon hours yesterday (April 22).
A group of approximately 20 people attempted to protest Sargsyan in front of the Patriarchate but the church administration warned the group that the protest is unpermitted.
Meanwhile, the police were seen taking precautions. Following the warning, the group gathered at Gedikpaşa Armenian Bible Church. The group getting crowded chanted “Reject Sezrh” slogans with Armenian flags.
The group also chanted “Prime Minister Pashinyan” slogans. In its statement, the group stated that they monitor the developments in Armenia with sorrow and they don’t accept Serzh Sargsyan. The protest ended with a prayer wishing well-being of Armenia.
Opposition leader has been detained
The protests against Sargsyan have been continuing at full tilt.
The law enforcers intervening in the demonstration staged in Yerevan have detained opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan and two other opposition politicians, Sasun Mikaelyan and Ararat Mirzoyan. "They were detained as they were committing socially dangerous acts", the prosecutor general's office said in a statement on Sunday. (PT/TK)
