This year Türkiye dropped five places in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) of Transparency International and was ranked 101st among 180 countries.
The index prepared each year by the organization was launched in 1995.
CPI ranks countries on a scale ranging from "highly corrupt" (0 points) to "very clean" (100 points).
Türkiye was able to get 34 points out of 100 in 2022, losing 2 points in a year, and had the lowest score in ten years.
"Politicization of judiciary, unregistered money, impunity"
The analysis made in the report on Türkiye highlights some of the problems causing the decline of the country in the index.
"After Türkiye was placed on the grey list by Financial Action Task Force in 2021, it is believed that the country continues with the declining trend due to factors such as the claims that the amount of unregistered money entering the country has increased after the Russia-Ukraine war, the politicization of the judiciary, the narrowing of the democratic sphere, the oppression the opposition faces and that the country is not following the ECtHR rulings," says the report.
Transparency International 2022 report also points out that the practice of impunity continues in the country, which results in corruption becoming more widespread and ordinary.
Decliner since 2013
Türkiye has declined 15 places in the index in the last two years. According to the report, the score of the country started to decline after 2013 and the country is among the group of countries that declined the most in the last ten years.
Türkiye's score which was 50 in 2013, dropped to 45 in 2014, 42 in 2015, 41 in 2016, and 40 in 2017. The score of the country was 38 in 2021 and 36 in 2022.
Albania, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Serbia, Peru, Panama, Kazakhstan, and Ecuador were the other countries scoring 36 in 2022 as Türkiye. (SD/PE)
