At the 26th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in India, Kurdish filmmaker Lisa Çalan has been granted the "Spirit of Cinema Award".
Lisa Çalan, also the honorary guest of the festival, received her award from the Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala. Making a speech in Kurdish in receiving the award, Çalan dedicated the award to the ones killed and injured in the massacres on June 5, Urfa's Suruç and Ankara.
Saying that "Kurdish women have recreated themselves with resistance", Lisa Çalan briefly said, "Kurdish women who shouldered a great resistance in Rojava have written a manifesto against the barbarism of ISIS. This manifesto is now inspiring the entire world today".

Çalan was severely wounded and lost her two legs in the ISIS attack against the rally of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in Turkey's Kurdish-majority southeastern province of Diyarbakır on June 5, 2015.
About the IFFK
The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), one of the prominent film festivals of India, is hosted by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy on behalf of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala.
The festival aims at presenting a competition section exclusively for films from Asian, African and Latin American countries and a selection of the best of World Cinema. The IFFK also showcases the Best of Malayalam Cinema for international audiences.
The first IFFK was held in Kozhikode in 1996. The Festival was held on the 100th anniversary of cinema and 100 films were screened as part of the event. It was managed by Kerala State Film Development Corporation till 1998 when the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy was formed. The Academy was entrusted with the conduct of IFFK together with other activities for promotion of cinema. Later, the FIAPF accredited the festival and a competition section was added to the event in 1999.
About Lisa ÇalanShe studied Cinema in Aram Tigran Conservatory in Diyarbakır. She participated in Middle East Cinema Academy as well as several film festivals. She was wounded in the bomb attack launched against the rally of Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in Diyarbakır on June 5, 2015. She still continues working on her scripts.
