After the announcement of yesterday's election results, the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and the Green Left (Yeşil Sol) Party have expressed their commitment to leading the democratic struggle in Turkey.
In a press conference held at the HDP headquarters last night, HDP Co-Chair Mithat Sancar and Green Left Party Co-Spokespersons Çiğdem Kılıçgün-Uçar and İbrahim Akın stated their determination to continue advocating for democratic principles.
During the press conference, Akın delivered a statement on behalf of the two parties, acknowledging the unjust and unequal nature of the election under the repressive conditions of the autocratic regime.
He highlighted that the candidate of the ruling People's Alliance, Tayyip Erdoğan, enjoyed unrestricted access to state resources and tools.
"We halted Erdoğan in the first round"
"Our strategy ... effectively halted Erdoğan's progress in the first round. In the second round, our commitment to regime change remained steadfast. The election data unequivocally shows that our supporters stood firmly behind their party's policies and goals, demonstrating resolute determination," said Akın.
"Notably, in the 16 regions with significant Kurdish populations, the voting preference for Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu remained consistent with that of May 14. Despite facing pressures and smear campaigns, our supporters remained unwavering."
The leaders expressed the importance of comprehending the fundamental reasons behind the election results and addressing any shortcomings, emphasizing their obligation to their people and their enduring struggle.
"We are here, and we will continue to pioneer the democratic struggle for change, both within the parliament and in all spheres of life," he affirmed.
In the parliamentary elections on May 14, the HDP participated under the banner of the Green Left Party, considering the risk of an ongoing closure case reaching a verdict before the elections.
In the presidential elections, both the HDP and Green Left Party lent their support to opposition candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. In cities with a significant Kurdish majority, Kılıçdaroğlu garnered a considerable lead over Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Ultimately, Erdoğan emerged victorious in the second round of elections, securing 52.15% of the total votes. (VK)
