Dismissed and replaced with a trustee by the Ministry of Interior on May 15, Peoples' Democratic Party's (HDP) Altınova Co-Mayor Casim Budak in the district of Korkut in eastern province of Muş has been arrested.
Taken into custody shortly after he was removed from office by the ministry, Budak was referred to courthouse on Saturday (May 16) following the procedures at the security directorate. Referred to court to be arrested after he deposed to the prosecutor's office, dismissed Co-Mayor Budak has been arrested on charge of "propagandizing for a terrorist organization."
Budak has been sent to Muş Type E Closed Prison.
What happened?
On May 15, 2020, the Ministry of Interior dismissed HDP's Siirt Provincial Co-Mayor Berivan Helen Işık, Baykan District Co-Mayor Ramazan Sarsılmaz, Kurtalan District Co-Mayor Baran Akgül, Iğdır Provincial Co-Mayor Yaşar Akkuş and Altınova Town Co-Mayor Casim Budak. Trustees have been appointed in place of dismissed HDP co-mayors.
Dismissed Siirt Co-Mayors Işık and Peymandara Turhan, Iğdır Co-Mayors Akkuş and Eylem Çelik, Baykan Co-Mayors Sarsılmaz and Özden Gülmez, Kurtalan Co-Mayors Akgül and Esmer Baran and Siirt Municipality worker Eşref Tekin were taken into custody following the appointment of trustees.
