The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) has appointed Prof. Mehmet Naci İnci as the acting rector of Boğaziçi University.
Appointed as the rector of Boğaziçi University by the Presidential decree of ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on January 2, 2021, Melih Bulu has been removed from office by a Presidential decree dated July 14, 2021.
The decision of the YÖK came shortly after this development.
Appointing Naci İnci as the acting rector, the YÖK has also put an ad for applications to the rectorship of Boğaziçi University.
According to this announcement, the candidates who meet the indicated conditions will be able to apply for the position until August 2, 2021.
Students protested Naci İnci
The dismissal of Melih Bulu came amid widespread protests of students and academics against his appointment.
During these protests, students also talked to Prof. Naci İnci, who was appointed by Bulu as the vice rector on February 8.
Meeting İnci at the South Campus, the students asked him, "Why have you accepted this position? While your two students from the department of physics are arrested, weren't you ashamed at all?" In response to these remarks, İnci said, "Let's do it like this: Let's talk about it again, okay? I now have a meeting. I will listen to you later. If you would excuse me..."
Students responded: "The trustee will leave; so will you. There cannot be any excuse for what you do. Shame on you. You cannot be our professor."
