Two earthquakes within ten hours on February 6 claimed so far the lives of more than 30 thousand people in Türkiye and 4,300 in Syria.
Many sensitive nose and highly educated dogs arrived in Türkiye together with the rescue teams from all around the world following the February 6 earthquakes.
One of these dogs specially trained for rescue work was Proteo from the rescue team from Mexico (Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional, SEDENA).
It was announced that Proteo died yesterday morning (February 12) during the rescue efforts in Hatay.
An official ceremony was held for Proteo who was a member of the SEDENA rescue team from Mexico.
The Ministry of Defence and Marcelo Ebrard C., the International Relations Secretary of Mexico shared posts on their social media accounts after Proteo.
Many messages were also shared on Twitter in Türkiye, expressing their sorrow about Proteo.
Dogs in the rescue teams from Türkiye and from other countries played an important role in the rescue efforts following the February 6 earthquakes and saved many people's lives.
16 dogs from Mexico
The rescue teams from Mexico, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Libya, Poland, Switzerland, Great Britain, Spain, Japan, and the USA had dogs in their teams.
16 trained dogs arrived to Türkiye from Mexico City, the capital of Mexico on February 8.
There are frequent earthquakes in Mexico and the country has highly trained civilian and military rescue teams. The dogs that take an active part in the rescue efforts played a significant role in rescuing people in the earthquake in Mexico in 2017.
One of these dogs, Frida, is known to have rescued 12 people in Mexico, Haiti, Guatemala, and Ecuador according to navy officials.
