Van Fortress, situated at the foot of the hills, is witnessing the destruction of its historical remnants known as the "Old City of Van."
These ancient artifacts in the eastern city of Van, dating back thousands of years to the time of the Urartu civilization, have fallen prey to the relentless pursuit of treasure hunters.
These fortune seekers have wreaked havoc on the archaeological sites through their excavations, Mezopotamya Agency (MA) reports. Furthermore, several areas housing historical remains have been repurposed as livestock barns. Historian Hasan Umar urgently stressed the need for immediate protection of the ancient city.
Highlighting the significance of Van's historical heritage, Umar underlined that the roots of the old city trace back to the 8th century BCE. He expressed deep concern over the neglect and lack of preservation efforts for these enduring structures, which bear testimony to the craftsmanship, mining activities, and artistic traditions of the Urartu civilization. Umar emphasized the importance of safeguarding Van's rich historical legacy.
Speaking about the cultural significance, Umar remarked, "Historical heritage represents a basin of human civilization. It is the responsibility of humanity to cherish its own cultural values and traditions.
"As we observe the histories of nations across the globe, we find that these communities have embraced, safeguarded, and shared their cultural treasures with the world. Van, in a similar vein, must embrace and protect its historical heritage."
Uneven treatment
The alarming situation also raises questions about the uneven treatment of historical sites in western cities. While many cultural sites and ancient cities in the country's west are meticulously preserved and restored, the neglect of Van's historical treasures is causing perplexity.
Umar pointed out that Van has the potential to become a thriving hub for global tourism if the city's rich history is properly embraced. He emphasized the importance of designating the old city as a protected area and ensuring that preservation efforts are carried out effectively.
Umar further voiced his concerns, stating, "When we examine the situation, it becomes evident that the destruction of cultural heritage is being pursued. If illegal activities such as smuggling and unauthorized excavations persist, and if the existing structures are left unprotected, it signifies an intention to erase the cultural identity of the region."
In conclusion, Umar stressed the need for Van Fortress and its surrounding structures to be safeguarded as vital cultural assets. He called upon the authorities to prioritize the preservation of Van's historical heritage.
"Preserving this remarkable cultural legacy is a collective responsibility. Regardless of one's background, culture is the shared heritage of humanity.
"Neglecting or dismissing a culture as 'not our own' will ultimately undermine our own interests. It is time to abandon such an approach and take decisive action to protect Van Fortress and its invaluable structures." (VC/CK)
