Mümtaz Soysal, a constitutional law professor, politician and columnist, has died in İstanbul at the age of 90.
He will be laid to rest at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery after the noon prayer at Zincirlikuyu Mosque on November 13.
Ankara University Faculty of Political Science, where Soysal lectured for decades, and the Turkish Journalists' Association have published a letter of condolence for Soysal.
About Mümtaz Soysal
He was born on September 15, 1929, in Zonguldak. He graduated from Galatasaray High School in 1949 and Ankara University Faculty of Political Science in 1953. He later became a Professor of Constitutional Law at Ankara University. He was also one of the founders of Yön, a political magazine founded in 1961.
He contributed to the 1961 Constitution, which was written after 1960 coup.
He founded the Socialist Culture Association with his friends in 1962.
After the 1971 coup d'état, he was detained for some months and was listed as an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience. In 1974, he became the first former prisoner of conscience to serve on the International Executive Committee of Amnesty International.
